Description

For those of you who aren't interested in the building itself ... this is a brick wall and an interesting window. :) For you history buff types ... this was taken in Harrison, Idaho, on Lake Coeur d'Alene. The building backs up onto the lakeside railroad tracks next to an old grain elevator. From what I've been able to learn on line, it's the Grant Brothers Building, and it's somewhere over 100 years old. The town suffered a fire in 1917 in which half the buildings in the town were burned, so this must be one that survived the fire. The front of the building faces the main road through Harrison. The most interesting thing about Harrison (to me, at least), is that the Coeur d'Alene River banks extend out into Lake Coeur d'Alene quite a ways. If that doesn't make any sense, you can look at a map here to see what I'm talking about. As we were driving through northern Idaho on our trip to the midwest last fall, we took a leisurely drive around Lake Coeur d'Alene, stopped in Harrison for lunch, and cut back up to I-90. It was a detour of about 45 miles, but every bit was worth it. SUCH beautiful country!

Wonderful textures Tara, i am interested solely in the brick wall and the interesting window :D Just kidding! Probably due to the fact it is 06 22 am here in London, and I am about to hit the hay, I saw a wee orange star on my little speech bubble and simply had to pay a quick visit :}

I don't quite know what it is, but I'm just drawn to old buildings like this. I think I'd have a field day with my camera in this town - just look at those wonderful textures! A beautiful shot of a beautiful find, Tara!

Nice shot! It does look to be coming apart here and there. That lake area is indeed interesting!

It looks terrific! Just the window alone is so full of interest, and then the marvellous rhythms of the bricks and all the varied colours make it outstanding. When I read the title my mind flashed "how did Tara get hold of a pic of my upper arms?" Strange things, brains.

Looks like there has been some attempt to make some repairs to the building.. The white bricks (which don't really match at all) seem much newer.. But has stopped and now fallen into disrepair.. Shame.. Interesting looking brickwork though.. Rob

What a beauty of a find, wow! I love those bricks, they seem to tell a sad story. I've heard that area is wonderful, I'd love to check it out some day, and I do see what you mean about the river and the lake! But I will refrain from mentioning in polite company what it looked like to me on first viewing...sometimes having a medical background and a warped sense of humour are a bit of a handicap!

Yes! The brick wall, so full of character and age. Although we can't see the quality of the side wall, seeing the backwall like this reminds me of something I learned while living around lots of old brick buildings in Leavenworth, KS. It was common for the experienced brick layers (master masons) to lay the bricks in front where they were most often seen. But the back walls and sumps under the outhouses were the domain of apprendices...after all, everybody has to learn their craft somewhere. Your wall has it all...textures of age, light, shadow, decay. Glad we got there when we did. One of these days this may revert to its original form...a big pile of bricks:)

100 years old! so, a 'new build' then :-) You know I love old brickwork, it's always interesting to see how it 'weathers' in different circumstances.This appears to have had a bit of cosmetic refurb done,to the left of the window.Some nice corbelling below the gutters, I actually learned to do that in college, not as simple as it looks..great view of an old'ish building, the weathered wood in the window gives a nice contrast.

This is such a nice capture Tara. It reminds me of my early days in Canada and the Eastern US. There were many free-standing buildings with walls like this. The broken windows just tell the story of better times in the past. Coeur d'Alene was a place where prostitution was supposed to have been legal in the early 1960s, or so the word had it at Paine Field.
