Description

...French for "deceive the eye". What's a small town to do to attract tourists to stop by? The Arts Council of Ottawa, Illinois came up with the idea of painting public art murals on walls of old downtown buildings. The mural above employs trompe l'oeil and really caught my eye. Click Here for trompe l'oeil wiki. The subject above is Brigadier General William H. L. Wallace, an early resident of Ottawa, a lawyer during peacetime and a Union General during the American Civil War in the 1860s. Ottawa now has at least seven of these large colorful murals depicting famous events and scenes of their local history. Bill P.S. Please zoom for full effect. "Museum Lighting 3" thumb_2306174.jpg

Nice shot of this excellent example of trompe l'oeil. I've admired the art of trompe l'oeil for a long time & have seen many examples in my travels. One of the most striking was the flat face of a building in Lyons, France on which very realistic windows were painted. And, of course, let's not forget those classic cartoon examples in which the Roadrunner draws a road on the side of a mountain & then runs through it, but which gives Wiley Coyote a concussion when he tries the same thing...

A beautiful and well detailed image which has taken a lot of time and effort to make. I hope it stands up well against the weather. Very good idea to put the town on the map and attract tourists. A "window" into history. Nice photo. I like that you included the shop windows and the greenery in front of the store. This gives a sense of scale. The lighting and camera angle are good. I like small town America, and this is one reason why: innovativeness, one of the chracteristics that makes America great. If you have more photos of their art work, please post. Keep up the good work! :-)

What a great shot, Bill! That is so beautifully done - I love a good trompe l'oeil - it really makes you look twice to get your head wrapped around what's real and what isn't.
