Description

this is right at the Ricasso showing the proof marks and apparently the date of proofing including the crown (acceptance by King/Queen?) the wooden handle has the Crown stamped into it as well the search led me to discover that this is a 'British Pattern 1907 Mk1 "SMLE" Short Magazine Lee-Enfield Bayonet' Rather cool I think

That is a king's crown marking Mike. The 1907 bayonnet Mk2. Which this is has King Edward's mark on it. These had a leather sheath so very few have survived over 100 years. What you have here Mike is a trophy worthy of a museum, the condition especially of the sheath makes this a rare find.

Man, I'll say. 1907. Wow. And I think The History Channel is brainwashing me with all these Pawn Shop shows, but I saw an episode late the other night in which Rick used an app to identify proof marks on a really old pocket watch. This reminded me of that.

I once had a lovely but small collection of such... a confederate battle sword (not a dress sword), South American short sword and a WWII bayonet. I have given them all away to my children as gifts. I adore a nice historical blade. Nice shot of detail.

Excellent macro-shot, Mike. This is pretty awesome. Did you know that Wilkinson is now owned by Energizer, the same people with the pink bunny? ;)

This is beyond cool Mike, and quite a collectors item you have. Thanks so much for providing the history behind this as it is quite obvious you spend a great deal of time doing your research.

Nice closeup shot. And yes its a MkII, the MKI has a hook quillion and is certainly rare. The MkII is not that rare. It was used right through WW1 and many thousands were issued. I have 2, both complete with scabbards.

guessing it's a handle to a sword? knife? ya gotta wonder who lost their life with it - weapons always have a way of making me wonder that - the instrument to send your soul to hell. nice shot mike.

We had these, and the rifles to go with them, in the Army Cadet Corps in the 1950s. Just before the Belgian FN30 was adopted by the British Army. The rifles were all dated between 1914 and 1918 and were the SMLE Mark 3 Star. Great rifle. The FN 30s were no good for smart arms drill.
