Description
But what kind is it?
Captured 4/5/12, at the semi beautiful El Dorado Nature Center in beautiful Long Beach, California.
ZOOM worthy.
This is a fowl of a different feather, at least to me. This one was full grown and not a duckling. I did some limited research on the species but came up with nothing. I trust some of you can name the different varieties of ducks in existence, so an identification would be warmly appreciated.
Adios, thankx for popping in, and for any and all favs and noncritical comments.

Some really fantastic photos of it Harry, and I too have no idea what species of duck it is.

It is a female Mallard.
goodoleboy
Durleybeachbum: That makes sense, because there were male mallards in the area. But what a difference in plumage! Thank you much for the ID.
brewgirlca
Yep, female mallard

Nice Harry. We have a small creek flowing through our yard and have actually had a pair of visiting Mallards twenty feet from our front door during the past two days.

Funny how in the bird world the males are almost always more beautiful.

Again I say "Ditto" to comments. I notice the camouflage effect of the duck against the background colors and textures. I guess it's a survival thing.

A mallard they are very common here where I live, nice shot!
danapommet
Beautiful mallard collage and gorgeous clarity in the feather details.

Excellent captures of this little Mallard duck, she is so plain compared to her handsome male counterpart. We have lots of them down here too. Sorry I have missed so many of your postings but I am still catching up on my learning.

I'm getting a wind here, so more comments! I can actually second the "mallard" vote, one of the few animal/plant things I can identify. Very fine clarity on its feathers, and it's amazing how well she blends into her background, as if she's seeking camouflage there. (I don't know if they do that alot---maybe they do. Near Lake Michigan, they're just happy to be near the water, and it doesn't matter what background they're on...) Good closeup work, Harry, we can see all the feathers in its neck, as well as the blue underneath its wings. I picture you kneeling, bending, hiding behind rocks, etc, to get these shots. I've learned to kneel for a bit and not move, so the ducks don't think I'm a threat: Then I shoot. Getting up afterwards is a whole other matter, however. My legs just go on strike...Fine bird captures.
