Description

Tricky to show you how immense these Redwoods are. ...been showing you alot of ground cover in earlier shots of this series in California's Redwood National Park and State Parks... ...thought you might like a look up today. ................................................. ...tallest Coastal Redwood trees have grown to about 420 feet (128 meters). That's as tall as a 40 story building! And six stories taller than the Statue of Liberty. ...90-95% of these old-growth beauties were logged between 1850 and 1920 when the remaining groves were saved by an act of Congress (pushed by very active citizens) thank goodness. ...I don't know how tall this particular tree is. It is just an average big tree:) The tallest one remianing today stands 379 feet (115.5 meters). Bill P.S. Left this quite big for zooming. P.S.S. A bit more info for my fellow tree-huggers out there:) Click Here "Life Support" thumb_2321274.jpg

Super capture Bill. I once read somewhere that as they are very tall and more likely to catch lightning strikes they have developed soft bark over millions of years so that in the event of a strike the bark will shatter and leave the tree intact.

Always loved those majestic trees! I've seen many up close on Vancouver Island in the early 80's before clear cutting became an accepted Canadian lumber cutting practice! Biggest Environment Rape I had seen in this country! I'm sure glad to see there are still some of those trees around - though they may not be as old as the ones I had the honor to hug and to kiss! Thanks! thecytron

Fantastic job of conveying the height & mammoth dimensions of these giants. I've tried to do this & have never been as successful as this. Haven't been there in many years, but we're planning a trip there in July...

I was going to post a pic of an angled high-rise today (for real), but after seeing this, I decided not to. It's out of respect...I always thought that capturing monumental trees would be hard, because they're all about monumentality, and that would dominate the shot so much, it would seem to lack in nuance, expression, etc etc. (Marilyn has spoken of this too.) But obviously I'm wrong. Some pics have been taken of these monsters that were as full as the forest itself, and this is one of them. This is beautiful, Bill, monumental, soaring, yet you break open at top into beauteous light & exquisite almost 'shag carpet' leaves. It's so soft & plush up there, one's amazed it all came out of that massive dark trunk. So, there is a whole world in a single tree. I'm grateful you gave us a large jpg, as a small one simply wouldn't show us the scope of this magnificent creature. (I'm sure that you'd love to post a huger one, with 20 MBS or more, if you could.) But given the compromise necessary on an art site, you couldn't have done better, sir. It's glorious; you have the eye for all that light up there, and the sweep & the soft beautiful leaves. I hope you continue this series, it's just wonderful...

Were you standing or lying on your back? I recall trying to film one with a Super8 film camera lying on my back, unsuccessfully (1968, way before video). I couldn't get the base in despite zooming out (too wide a trunk), and the top was out-of-sight. And, with nobody in the film, the size just couldn't be grasped. I can imagine the trees in heaven being like this. This photo puts us in perspective in relation to nature. Looking up, I feel like an ant. Would be wonderful to visit such a forest again. I'm really glad you've taken the time to post all these beautiful photos, and hope you post more! :-)

LOL @ Arthur! :P Never in a million years. This is gorgeous! The light is just right, and you managed to capture the sheer size of the thing (Arthur's comment notwithstanding). :*

Stunning, neck wrenching capture of this venerable beauty, Bill. This picture was immediately placed into my category of AWESOME. Hard to believe that most of these majestic giants were logged into virtual extinction, but knowing mankind in general, I'm not surprised.
