Description
Act I - The Fallen Goddess - Episode 1
It's an unusually warm night in the Sarodor wasteland. Derek paces the bowels of the Temple, his footfalls echoing through the ancient, deserted corridors. There was a time when these halls were crowded and full of life. But that time has passed.
Derek has been the Captain of the Guard for...well, for longer than he cares to remember. There was a time when he loved it here, when he enjoyed nothing better than the endless parade of spirited, nubile young women came to live in the Temple, and the knowledge that it was him who kept them safe. There was a time when Mother Sinistra could convince him their cause was good and noble. But now the stony halls are all but empty. The number of recruits has plummeted, and Sinistra has resorted to less scrupulous methods to swell her dwindling ranks.
Derek turns a corner and stands at the door of one of the induction rooms that lay hidden hundreds of feet below the shifting sands of the Sarodor desert. This is the only induction room that still gets used. The others lay dark and empty, slowly disappearing beneath an ever thickening veil of dust and cobwebs. The glory days of the Order are well and truly over.
Inside the induction room, Mother Sinistra reads to the newest recruit in a loud and musical voice. Her voice is compelling. When she speaks, you cannot help but listen. The recruit - a young, dark-skinned prostitute named Emma - stares at Sinistra with wide, terrified eyes. She fiddles with the chains that restrain her to the desk and looks around the room helplessly, looking for some way out, for someone to rescue her. But no help is forthcoming. She is a part of the Order now, and she will be until the day she dies.
After a few more days of listening to Sinistra's melodic, hypnotising voice, she won't even want to leave.
Derek feels a pang of sympathy, then shakes it away. There is no point in feeling sorry for the new recruits. Once they are here, there is no way out. That's life in the Order. That's life in the Temple.
Suddenly he realises Sinistra has stopped speaking. She is looking at him. "Derek, why don't you go check on our guest upstairs?" she says.
Our guest? he thinks. You make it sound like she is here by choice. But she is anything but.
"Yes, Mother Sinistra," he replies. He steps out into the hallway and begins to make his way upstairs.
As he climbs the ancient and crumbling staircase, he reflects on the fact that Sinistra never calls her prisoner by name. She calls all of the girls and guards by name, and even the new recruits like Emma who are brought here against their will. But she only ever refers to the prisoner as "our guest" or simply "her".
That's because Sinistra is terrified of her, he thinks. And so she should be.
