This was the only one of your patriotic series that I didn't comment on, so I will now. Well, this is the simplest of the three in the series, and it's amazing how you take a single eagle's head and paint a whole universe around it. Your integration of the flag in the folds of the eagle's "mane" (its head feathers) is seamless. They almost seem to have grown that way. You even have some of the flag's curl in the beak, which seems as if it could have been there to begin with. Seamless integration, in other words...But, as the flag moves into the deep abyss of the bottom of the painting, it takes on the quality of inner thought itself. I've begun to realize that you have deep abysses and inner worlds at the bottom of a number of your paintings. And they feel like the deep recesses of the soul, from which we emerge into the world. Here, you have this miraculous mix of forest, undulating light, dark-green flame, marine-like forms, and of course trees and growth themselves---but merging with the forms of inner feeling & heart. Unlike "hell," these deep places are profound & 'calling'; and to go in there can only bestow light and replenishment. Your upper sky has the smoothness of painted light, and you even have a pink light at the upper left corner, as if there's this pink orb way in the distance looking down on it all...It's quite beautiful, and---as I said in another of this series---so different from many of the patriotic images we commonly see. And since you're honoring the war dead (some of whom you knew and were close to), I can't think of a more sensual, profound and wholly embracing way to do it. Because rather than saluting, you've let the universe deeply hug these souls, and envelop them in gowns of light & beauty. Exquisite stuff. A deep fav for this series. This is just beautiful work, Carol.
