Description

Captured on a very overcast morning, 5/22/12, about a block from my semidomesticated dwelling. A ZOOM is highly recommended. Because the original was so dreary, my digifiddling abilities were pushed to the limits in creating some decent balance with the contrast and lighting effects. In contrast to Andrea's endless variety of esoteric insects, the one above is just your garden variety honey bee. And, I like the crumpled paper texture of the petals. Incidentally, this is the only prickly poppy bush I've come across in all of my photo excursions around Southern California, and it's virtually next door. Adieu, thankx for stopping by, and for any and all favs and noncritical comments.

Superb pic, Harry! I find this plant quite tricky to grow here and accidently broke off the ONLY new shoot it has made this year!

So pretty and it looks really delicate Harry. I think you did an excellent job on the "digifiddling". Nice job! :-)

Great catch Harry. We've got a big Rhodie full of blooms and lots of bees buzzing around it. Maybe I can get a photo of it today...thanks for the inspiration. And Happy Memorial Day to you...it is great that we're still around to enjoy it:)

I don't know what the original looked like, or what the light was like, but from what you wrote, you had to do some concentrated postwork to coax out the original beauty of this flower from amidst poor lighting conditions or whatever else you contended with. Well, it worked. One would never know you were up against anything, it's that clear. I've never seen this type of poppy, as my poppy-experience is limited mainly to the common "red" variety. It does look like crumpled paper, like crepe paper, in fact almost like some very brittle fabric (like a silk flower). And you caught the stamens as a beautiful burst in the center of it all. To bring home the point of getting the shot in one's backyard, we suddenly realize this is shot near a metal wire-link fence, rather than in a beautifully landscaped public garden or park. Which points to your ever seeking eye, once more. As for the insect, well I've yet to capture even one, and yeah, Andrea seems to have a whole bevy of them whom she pays big bucks to come out & pose whenever she needs the little devils. But this one is fine, and in fact its small stature fits the shot, since these petals are probably a bit of a hike for a small insect. Beautiful bold capture, and you did fine work to bring it forth this clearly and beautifully with your postwork. Doesn't look touched in the least. I have to stop for now, but I'll get to others incl your beautiful agapanthus. And thank you so much for the YouTube link, it was quite moving, Harry. Very sensitively done. And I saw Dana's comment on your Memorial Day shot (along with everyone else's) and it was very moving as well. When I come back, I'll leave a comment on his image from the Vietnam Memorial. Much appreciated. I'll be back for more...
