Carol, all your tributes to those who sacrificed in war are beautiful, sensuous and deeply passionate. And in this one, you mentioned everyone, ie, the whole gathering of those who sacrificed in war. That makes it special in its own right. But you also used a Native American symbol, a symbol common to a number of your works, which those of us who've been following you for some time know means a great deal to you.On that, it's hard to say this well, but I'll try: For most, it would be hard to place Native American symbols into commemorations of those who've sacrificed for America. It's hard because of what our ancestors did to Native Americans, waging war on them from the beginning. Which points to you and your heart: That you are one of the few who could put Native American heart in the very center of a Memorial Day image, and make it whole, completely fitting and organic. It's at the heart of the animals you evoke, of the nature you evoke, and of the spirit of celebration and dance that you evoke---all of which are deep in the Native traditions. These images are commemorations for the next generation, for a new generation; they transcend the old divisions that often accompany commemorative days. The dream catcher motif with its typical feather at the bottom and its honoring of the animal kingdom at all levels; your signature portrait of animals themselves (often with two or three joined together, or perhaps the same one in a few views); and your signature undulated sky with the animal center floating freely in its middle...these bring the traditional commemoration into not only a global light, but an ancient and ageless one as well. Beautifully done; and it reminds us that even the eagle (which we've somehow appointed as our 'own'), is at base a guardian of the whole earth, and belongs to the visions of our predecessors as it does to our own. We're united, in other words. A beautiful series with a lesson at its heart. (The mention of all, ie, fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, children, etc, reminds us that war takes its toll on everyone. And also that the endurance and love that all go through---even those who are unsung---are legion as well. Something you know deeply from your own experience. A wholly embracing vision. Again, beautifully done, all three...)
