Description

This is the way it looked moments before visibility went to zero - luckily only for a few seconds, but twice. The windshield wipers were going full blast. Southbound on State Route 77 between Oracle Junction and Catalina, north of Tucson, Arizona. Temperature 63F. This was the rain in the system that caused the sandstorm that hit Phoenix about three hours later. I had planned to post some aircraft pictures I had taken while at Reading, Pennsylvania for the annual World War II reenactment, but that has got to wait. I never thought that I would get that excited about rain when I lived in Germany, Canada, on the East Coast or in Washington. But when one hasn't seen a decent rainstorm in a year this is a major event. This picture was taken on 16 June 2012 at 3:20PM. Sig...

Outstanding capture! I can understand the joy and terror of seeing a hard rain when most of the time it is dry

I hate driving in the rain. Once, I was on my way to Toronto in a pouring rain and my windshield wiper broke. Could barely see to get to a mechanic. It was scary.

Zero visibility! How did you drive in these conditions? Excellent capture! :)

@emmecielle. The zero visibility lasted only a few seconds, otherwise I don't know how I could have pulled over. Normally we often have zero visibility conditions during duststorms, usually outside the cities on the freeway between Phoenix and Tucson which occasionally result in casualties.

Very atmospheric. Made me think of winshield wipers beating out rhythm. Hope you had some good music playing:) I've been in a deluge like this some years back but I think I was driving through some cornfields somewhere in the midwest. Imagine being on a motorcycle in something like this!!

I wouldn't want to be on a motorcycle in this mess. My very first car, a 1951 Buick I had while living in Toronto, a 'Yankee car' as the Canadians called it (it had a straight 8 and the hood opened from the side) had vacuum operated windshield wipers, and the time you needed them the most, when you were on the gas, they just about stopped. Always had to get off the gas to make them go faster.

Whooooo-eee! Driving in the driving rain! You weren't kidding ... wow. I hadn't seen this when we talked earlier today. I sure see what you mean! We get this every once in a while, but not as much as one might think if they hadn't been here. It rarely rains THAT hard! Incredible. Glad you got to experience the rain, and glad you got out okay! :)

you know what comes to my mind.todays politicians have such a blurred view at things and it could be soo easy to ease the problems if they only wished to do so,regardless of religion and political party. we are all sitting in the same boat but apparently unable to get the right direction. PS.but sadly too many shit in the boat.lol.

You get caught in this and there is not much you can do. Right after I took this picture the visibilty went to zero, the view stopped at the windshield - and that was scary, because even if I had wanted to pull over, I couldn't see anything. Lucky, the zro visibility only lasted a few seconds.
