Description

I don't mean to overburden you with pics, but a friend asked if she could see the original for my "Bird Pond" (here). This is it. Some might prefer it to the "etched" version, but my purpose was to explore what's possible, to experiment... Personally, I find it problematic in both versions: This version, because it was too saturated for my tastes, and---being on an older camera (2 MP)---it just didn't have the definition/clarity equired for such overgrowth. And both versions, because the overgrowth just didn't 'lay well' for me. It was too busy, a bit too clumped... But that's precisely why I played with it: To learn from a problematic image. I wanted to share a problematic upload for once, rather than always try for something 'finished'. I hope you find it interesting. However, I think this would make a fine drawing, and I may try it soon...
Thank you again for your support. It means the world to me. Peace, Mark (2010. Lincoln Park, Chicago.)

There is a lot going on here, but it still works. It still has that "painterly" look that I find appealing. I do like the B&W version best; it grabbed my eye right away. It's fun to take something that doesn't quite work and fix it. We all have our own take on what that is!!

Mark, I'm so glad you decided to share the original photo with us. The etched version was magnificent and filled with detail, but the original is really a stunner also. This is one of those ideal scenes depicting a place one would love to spend the day. Very nice work on this photo as you managed to capture its true essence and everything that makes this setting majestic.

This really has a painted look to it, and I just love all the various shades of green reflected in the water. I think I'm partial to the color version, but I like both. CC

I must echo Andrea in this regard as to her preference over the b & w etching. And, whether good or bad, or an asset or hindrance, the image is loaded with contrast and texture. Your Nikon 2mp has been holding its own so far.

This shows the camera's limitations, yes, but there's nothing bad you can do to this image. It's about composition and light and reflection and color values. The bones of the picture are there, and the postwork choices you've made bring out the different images within the image, if you know what I mean. Like the idea that each choice we make puts us on a different path, but that all those possible paths exist somewhere. I could take your original and postwork it in ten different ways, and I bet they'd all look great. (Seriously ... I opened this in Photoshop and turned it blue and orange, and it's fabulous.) If you give up the notion that photography has to be straight, that it has to be clear and perfect, there's a lot of great art to be had! (I don't mean YOU you, just the generic "you" that's all of us and also people we don't know who are fussy-butts.) Not that there's anything wrong with those perfect shots ... but sometimes the image itself is more important than the quality, and the "defects" are what adds character and depth to an image. I'm glad you shared this. It's probably my favorite spot in the world that I've never been to. :)

Ooh, love the lighting here; it's a beautiful spot, and I'm sure it's a great spot to visit at all seasons and times of day! Maybe you should set up camp...
