Description

I guess I could start any one of these posts by saying, "Now this aircraft really fascinates me". The Mi-24 "Hind" is one of them. Truly a flying tank, it's main thrust was armored survivability and speed. I'm not sure if it still holds true, but it did hold the speed record for active military helicopters! A surprise to me is that it really is not very good at hover flight like most rotary wing craft, but actually flies in and out of combat more like the A-10 Warthog. The rather large wings that are required to give it lift also accommodate a munitions dump of nasty bits. It also can tote seven troops or twice that many stretchers. It looks like it follows the philosophy of "make it so it can stand hitting a brick wall" and, oh yeah, it has to fly too! Mi-24 "Hind" credited to mandun, free at sketchup warehouse...liberally re-textured by myself in the dank mouldy studio basement. Vue6infinte and Photoshop Cs3

gorgeous, bubba! I love these ungainly Russian babes.... Soldier of Fortune mag once offered a million bucks for capturing one intact; now you can probably buy one on eBay!!

A few mean looking dragon-flies there! It amazes me that "wings" can work on a chopper packing all that downdraft- or is it mostly doing a kind of "auto-gyro" thing- using the rotors as rotating wing? Great idea to catch the downdraft on the sea.

I always looked on these as a heavy weapons flying APC rather than a nimble attack chopper. As with many Russin machines it was designed to be tought rather than look pretty but it still looks fantastic. Wonderful image and postwork on the sea Bill.

It is a rather mean looking machine, thats for sure.. Not seen one at an airshow but I know they were at a few in the UK now and again.. We do have a Cobra here now though lol The actual 'World Speed Record' for a Helicopter is held by the Westland Lynx.. Yes, surprising huh? But, I'm sure the 'In Service' models, loaded down as they are with hardware are not as fast.. They are quick though, having seen them at airshows and they do loop! Rob
