Description
This P-47G original code 42-25068 has been restored in the markings of P-47D-6, 42-74742 of the 78th FG's 84th FS, based at Duxford in 1944.Primarily flown by Capt Julius Maxwell, and christened 'SNAFU' / War Eagle. Maxwell was a veteran of 133 missions between April 1944 and January 1945,and in December 1944 he shot down the 78th FG's 300th German aeroplane. After 90 missions, 42-74742 was damaged beyond repair in a landing accident at Duxford on 15th December 1944 whilst being flown by Lt Earl Stier. The fighters assigned pilot at this time was actually Lt Severino 'Louis' Calderon.
Well I took 4 pictures of this as it rolled by, and somebody stood up in front of me in the other 3.....'bloody annoying' to say the least, though I got a couple of nice shots on the flight line.
Have to check with Rob, the more of these we post the more likely we are to 'SNAFU' each others intended posts....so by way of a change... tomorrow will see news from...oh what was it called? oh yeh!... 'The Plant', anybody remember that place ?

Ah, so that's why the picture is called Snafu - people's heads bobbing up and in the way. The usual thing when photographing! I'm glad the guy that stuck up his head in this photo is a ghost! :) Damaged beyond repair at a landing accident - I wonder what was so badly damaged. Landing gear? Wings? Engine mount? It seems like they've succeeded pretty well in repairing it. Is that Tailspin in the cockpit? Nice photo with interesting paint work. Are those markings in front of the wing base the number of kills made by the plane? If so, it looks very impressive! Don't worry too much about Snafu-ing with Rob. Such can be fun, and revealing things from different angles/points of interest. The Plant? What's that? A telephone bug? A hidden bomb? Of course we remember the Plant! And Tailspin. And all the fun and games, secret projects, and so on. Will be fun to see what they've cooked up this time! Keep up the good work! :-)

A very nice close up and I bet this did roar! Is that half a kill below the cockpit. What you need is a pair of 'Rosa Klebb' shoes for a swift kick :) 'The Plant'...Triffids anyone or a dark room where unusual objects are created :)

First up mate! Excellent.. Yep, I had 'head' trouble at the start, so i advised a move to the rear, it kinda worked for me.. This is a super shot of the detailing, maybe a 'new' skin coming up at the plant.. ? As for us SNAFU'ing each other, I wouldn't worry to much, we post a different times, we will see.. And the views will be on the most part different.. I had the Hubble Telescope fitted! You had, well I wasn't sure, but it got great shots!!! Another Fave mate! Rob

Great close up Neil. I can see that you guys can't get as close as we can. Whats that behind SNAFU?

Amazing beast, the old Thunderbolt... maybe "Thors-Hammer" is more appropriate! If in doubt... use a bigger hammer!
