Description

Phantom F4-F,it bares the Richthofen emblem (over the NATO star) and is still an integral part of todays Luftwaffe.JG 71 "Richthofen" Squadron is part of the NATO "Command Force (CF)".It is also part of the "Immediate Reaction Force (IRF)" for deployment in crisis regions. A short chronology: 06.06.1959 The Jagdgeschwader 71 is founded at Fliegerhorst Ahlhorn. 01.06.1960 The Squadron is equipped with CL-13B Sabre Mark V 21.04.1961 On the 43rd Anniversary of the death of Rittmeister Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen, German president Heinrich Lübke gives the Squadron the title "Richthofen". April 1963 The Squadron moves to the Fliegerhorst Wittmund 09.04.1963 The squadrons first two F-104G Starfighters land at Wittmund 07.03.1974 The first two F-4F Phantoms lands at Wittmund 19.09.1974 Last flight of an F-104G Starfighter Present day the Squadron is equipped with the F-4F Phantom. They may have changed the squadron number but the lineage is long and illustrious. The days of high scoring Aces may have passed, but I can't help wondering what a Richthofen or a Molders could do with something like this...... Taken at RAF Waddington 2012 International Airshow, 4 frame pano....this is actually half the original size :-)

What would they have thought indeed. Of course Adolf Galland lived until 1996 and I wonder what he thought of the changing face of aviation. Fine image and history mate :)

OH MY! Is the nose THAT long? What a surprise! Great looking panorama. I don't see any seams. As UVDan says, surprising that these are still in use. It shows what a good design can do for a planes life (and a decent government - the Germans are frugal). I sure see the R for Richthofen placen on the NATO star. Nice way of combining the two. These folks show a bit of pride. Thanks a lot for the beautiful photo. Keep up the good work! :-) PS - Neil, check out - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drnnulHw5CM&feature=related It takes a while with the training, but may be something for your work place. Bets, anyone? :)

Certainly get their monies worth these days... think about how many plane changes airforces had in the few decades from WW1 to the end of WW2
