Description

Captured 7/6/12, around late noon, at the beautiful Rancho Los Alamitos in beautiful Long Beach, California. Outstandingly ZOOM worthy. No, this is not the great white horse Silver from 'The Lone Ranger.' Five of SEVENTY FIVE fotos alone I took of two draft/draught horses, the other equine to be posted later. Huge nostrils on these guys, with fetlocks that won't quit. This one was only sociable if it felt you were going to give it a nosh like a sugar cube. Waited months for the renovation to be completed at this site, so I could come visit the farm animal section of the Rancho. We were promised a whole host of draft/draught horses, chickens, rabbits, sheep, ducks, but unfortunately no cows or goats. Anyway, when I arrived, instead of a farm yard stocked full of these animals, I found, besides only the two horses, just two sheep, four chickens, two ducks, and one rabbit. Most underwhelming, with not even a partridge in a pear tree. And to make things worse, the chickens, ducks and rabbit were safely ensconced behind photo-unfriendly chicken wire, which really killed off any chance of taking any pics of that subject matter. Can I say disappointing? A groundskeeper later told me that they were just getting started and that more animals would be added as time went by. Oh well, at least admission was free. Cheerybye, thankx for clicking on, and for any and all favs and noncritical comments.

These are fabulous captures of this beautiful draft horse. I've not seen a white one before. It looks so sturdy and reliable. A shame there wasn't more of a selection of animals for you to photograph but at least it was free to get in. Better luck next time.

I wanted to do your latest, since I so often pounce around in your 'back gallery', so here I am. Sorry you didn't get all the animals you expected, I guess they're a little slow on the uptake, but it allowed you to concentrate on this beautiful horse. Yes they have large nostrils, and when I saw the last shot I almost thought it had been injured, I've never seen such "flesh colored" noses before (on horses, that is). Like your car and plane shots, you gave us the 'full show', ie all the important angles, and you captured the light on its back, luminous as it is, and its muscularity too. I know nothing about horses, but I'd guess this is a strong horse, from the looks of it. Very clear captures, with their beautiful coats in highlight from the light you caught on their backs. And a full collection of its many poses too. Hopefully when you return here, more animals will be out for your camera(s)...

At least the horse was sort of friendly and didn't mind getting his picture taken...He looks like a large fellow indeed, and fully feathered in the knee to ankle area. I love that from-the-nose POV! Great work, Harry! BTW, when I first moved to the Long Beach/Cerritos/Los Alamitos corner area in about 1966 most of the area was still dairy farms with narrow roads. I used to ride my bike to go talk to the horses in their pastures. That didn't last long, the building frenzy began and now it's all covered over with concrete and homes and businesses.
