Description

Well it's that time already. My daughter's senior portraits are on the agenda. We've started scouting for the best poses, outfits and backgrounds. We started indoors and chose a few that we'd like to work on. The 300 some we took are basically "dry run" and we are going to improve on them after viewing and discussing. She did like this one for a possible keeper. All the kids now are into this high contrast (ghost like) look. I achieved this with the diffused glow filter and it think it might grow on me. lol Any thoughts you have on how to improve are welcomed!! I am ok with criticism so PLEASE describe what you would do differently. I want to get better not just be satisfied with what I have done. Beyond that - having her become a senior just makes me feel OLD. sigh. Thanks for the visit. Much appreciated. Jodie

That's a nice photo :) But if I was to change anything at all, I would have her rotate her hips just a little bit. That would change her pose a little, and the clothes would drape better on her body. I also would have tried a shot with black clothing, since her skin tone kind of disappers in this picture (unless her skin is that pale, then I would try to give her a just a little color). I would also either moved the roses more to the center of her chest and tilted them a bit, or removed them. They kind of disapper because they are too far out in the corner Besides from that, she looks cute ;)

Hi Jodie, nice glowing portrait of a glowing Megan ;o) In my opinion, the one thing that keeps this from being a keeper is the position of her arm. Arms with the elbow pointed toward the lens are always awkward looking. Better would be if the arm was pointing wider out, so that the shortening perspective doesn't get in the way. As it is, I see no way to correct that in this image. The fact that the arm is only partially visible doesn't help. My advice would be to use another image, just because of that arm. If the arm doesn't bother you, here's another thing that could easily be improved: the diffusing. Megan's face is nicely diffused to a good and stylish effect, but the rest of the image is not diffused nor glowing. This gives the impression that there is no unity in the image; it's a bit like a picture in another picture. Maybe you could try to apply or extend the diffusing slightly to other parts of the image (outfit and roses), just to balance things out more. As it is, I think you just lost the balance a bit. One more very small niggle: against a dark background like here, the white negative space on the lower left side, where her hair doesn't reach the side of the image, is a bit distracting. Maybe you could clone some of the hair in that space to fill up that white. Cheers and good luck with the hundreds of images! ;o)

It's a nice portrait as it is but I think I would drop the dead roses they look like an after thought, try and lose the shadow on the background above the arm and soften the shadow under the chin you can make a reflector with stiff card and kitchen foil to bounce some light back into the shadows or a diffuser on the flash or whatever light you are using, and if the roses go perhaps crop slightly more off the bottom. I agree with girsempa about the white space on the left but you could add some hair in photoshop to lose it also try dropping the elbow a bit it might help the balance and lose the bit of armpit that is not to good. Hope this helps if you want to get your own back you can nit pick one of my pictures sometime.

Yes, by all means, trash those dead roses! Other than that, Jodie, a nice photo, and the helpful comments above are really something to consider.

First of all, I think it's a pretty neat image and with a couple of changes it could, in my humble opnion, be a better image. Perhaps I've some tips that might help you. The technical issue: - people tend to look at the brightest parts of a photo. In your photo there are two areas that compete with eachother: the wall and the face, where, in fact, the face is slightly brighter than the wall. But the difference in brightness between the two is so minimal that your eyes are kinda wandering between them. I assume your main subject is your daughters face, so that part of the photo should be the brightest. Hence: the wall must be darkened a little. It will than attracks the eyes to the face (kinda cryptical, but I hope you know what I mean). In addition, also the arm could be darkened as well, but is not necessary. Maybe a slight vignetting could work as well. - when people look at a photo of a human - and certainly a portrait - the focus is on the eyes of the main subject. The eyes should be sharp or sharper than the surroundings. In your photo the roses are more in focus than the eyes, so the viewers eyes are drawn to the roses. Perhaps some extra sharpening around the eyes and some blurring on the roses. - I disagree with other folks about the dead roses, although I think they are to prominent in the photo. I would crop the image more and when cropping I would crop it according to the diagonal (a rule like the rule of thirds), with the intersection of the diagonals in your daughters left eye. I hope this will help you a little. I you like I can send you the photo with the changes I mentioned above. Good luck with your photography!

I like it and recognized the Diffuse Glow as I like that one too. Try using Poster Edges along with the Fade control prior to using Diffuse Glow. Or, you might try the Dry Brush or Watercolor in place of Poster Edges. The key is to use the Fade to prevent overkill of the effects. Another thing would be to just apply the effect to part of the image (with a lot of feathering) instead of all of it. By all means forget all so-called 'rules' and just crop to what looks good to yourself. That's my 2¢ worth!
