Description
On the way to Samburu we passed Mount Kenya. Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro. It is an extinct volcano created approximately 3 million years after the opening of the East African rift. The highest peaks of the mountain are Batian (5,199 metres (17,057 ft)), Nelion (5,188 metres (17,021 ft)) and Point Lenana (4,985 metres (16,355 ft)).
These are named after They commemorate Mbatian, a Maasai Laibon (Medicine Man), Nelieng, his brother, and Lenana one of, his sons.
The origin of the name Kenya is not clear, but perhaps linked to the Kikuyu, Embu and Kamba words Kirinyaga, Kirenyaa and Kiinyaa which mean "God's resting place" in all three languages.

Great to this. I have three sets of friends who worked in Kenya for years, none of whom took any photographs!

Beautiful peaks! I bet that used to look much like Mount Rainier ... the scene is so familiar, with the exception of that big missing part! Fascinating to see this. I'm glad you weren't like Andrea's friends!

What a beautiful shot! It's quite dramatic with those threatening clouds, majestic purple mountains and the green of the pastures and forests. It really takes in quite a lot. Gorgeous! I have a friend who recently got back from climbing Kilimanjaro.
