Description

This is a WIP and I am getting a bit stuck with it. It's one of my mood-catching images and I am not sure it feels right just yet. I decided to take a break from it for now and in the mean while I hope you can give me some critique or just your thoughts about the image and what mood it creates in you. Maybe it will help me get unstuck... ***UPDATE*** I think I am starting to get some idea of what's wrong. (Maybe the title? ;)...) I wanted to clarify that I wasn't going to anything cheerfully cute (but it appears I failed). This was not meant as a happy feeling image. If anything, it's a very dark and somewhat depressing place. But maybe I didn't make it dark and depressing enough? However it's not meant to be hopeless and all out depressing. The future of the girl is uncertain and she feels deprived of human company, but the cat is there, and the cat is actually a very powerful source of hope and contentment. I think I'm not striking the balance correctly, and that's why it's failing... I would really appreciate your comments to help me think about it more... ***UPDATE #2*** I tried to take in the excellent suggestions you've made and altered the image a bit. I went for more shape definition in the lighting, but also overall more fog and fewer bright colors. I hope it solves the ambiguity by establishing the mood as "not in any way cheerful". I would prefer "creepy" to "cheery" for this image :). I tried introducing another light source (the street lamp), but to me it changed the meaning a bit. It implied another (and probably adult) presence somewhere and it added some warmth to the image. And I wanted it to stay cold, desolate and bland. I really appreciate all the wonderful comments. It was extremely helpful for me to see this image through your eyes. Thank you! (If you have commented already, but have more thoughts, perhaps about the new version, please send me a note. I would really appreciate it. Thank you.)

Looks a littel dark for something called Friends. Maybe a very bright day with blue clouds and the sun surorunding the alley coudl create a more friendly atmosphere.

Actually a bit of blue backfill light from behind the camera will lighten the image (and the mood) a bit. Not too much light, just enough to bring out a few textural details. I would make the sky a tad brighter too. Really nice mood here, I like how its going.

Very sweet and atmospheric - though I agree with earlier comments, perhaps a little moody for what should be a warm feeling.

I am liking looking at the friends from a dark place. They are friends partly because they share this dark world and they choose to team up and be loyal to each other and to find comfort in each other. The darkness establishes the need for the gift of friendship - and thus, their friendship runs deep. I love the touch of her white socks peeking through. Some possible changes... Her facing to me is too square. It makes it stable, but also a little spooky, Just an 1/8th of a turn might change this. Second, the cat's facing is ambiguous. If the cat is looking at her, then eyes might help with that, and currently the cat doesn't seem to look right at her. If the intent (and I consider it the better intent) is to have the cat gaze into the landscape with her, sharing her activity, then somehow, this needs to read better. One approach (and I don't know if it will work) is to make the sky just a little bit darker (twilight), and have the lantern lit with a weak yellow type light that could add a little more dimension to their shapes. And also establish the circle of their tight friendship. I like this image and the companionship demonstrated here very very much. Well done!

I think more light ... something more cheerful .. and brighter sky and colors, maybe.

I really like this as it is, yes it does have an ethereal almost creepy vibe to it but I like that.

I like the image...great mood and it does convey a feeling that the girl is alone with the cat. It might just be how the image appears on my monitor but the shadows look bleached out to me. The pov is great but i think if you made the light stronger over the figures and left the shadows in the walkway a lot darker it would give a better result. Otherwise i like this a lot
