Description

Just back from a week down in the San Francisco Bay Area with our 9 year old grandson, so lots of catching up to do in the galleries, which I will start on tomorrow. This is a photo of the Palace of Fine Arts. It's architecture is amazing, but has been photographed to death, so I tried to get as original a view as I could & replaced the dull, foggy background with one that I shot inside the Exploratorium - which is a great hands-on interactive science museum for kids (& adults who never grew up) housed inside the Palace. My grandson had a great time there & could have spent hours more if we hadn't dragged him away so he could explore & experience more of the city...

I love this concept. I have photographed this building a dozen ways but never thought to do it in this way. Gorgeous.

I love what you've done here! One of the joys of living in the 21st century is the ability to tweak reality. There's nothing false about it at all, but rather a different sort of emotional and aesthetic honesty. I like that and I like exploring the possibilities it opens up. THIS is a perfect example of that! I love the architecture, the detail, the sense of color and place. And to top it off, you replaced a dull, drab background and chose a wonderful compliment. This is super work. Wonderfully seamless.

the monument is awesome no doubt and your use of a bubbly funky sky adds greatly to the image

your super-imposed sky is perfect for the architecture, as the architecture is elaborate, sweeping and playful. ("Playful"s a strange term for such a self-consciously 'grand' style, but the broad sweep and muscular arches---being very thick and at angles to each other---make this a visual playground. Thus "playful". Just don't tell the architects I said that, I think they'd prefer "monumental," lol.) It is a grand sweeping space, and you caught it just right, bringing out the towering pillars, the sweep of the arches, really full detail in all the ornaments, and the beautiful bee-hive segmentation of the ceiling. (The vaulting, etc.) You've a fine eye for architectural language. And you caught a lot of fine detail, as I said---the fluting, the detail on the capitals, the ornament, the embossing/bas relief on the two big 'vases' on either side, etc etc; all caught with an eye towards their beauty. Your hue-scheme is rich and warm, and your added sky makes a delightful fantasy of it all. Beautiful architectural capture. Can only do a few images now, will be back for more; but this was a terrific example of what you've been doing of late, images of real commitment, very rich hues, and very rich and overflowing detail...
