Description

Geraniums are ubiquitous in South Tirol as well as all over our mountains. They are often in combinations of red and pink and make balconies and window-sills merrier. Here the red of the geraniums have a counterpoint in the yellow of the Golden Delicious. The most interesting thing about modern apple growing is that the apple trees are nowhere to be seen. Apples, instead, are grown as grapes, with very thin, almost non-existent boughs and trunks. They are made of mostly leaves and fruits, and are tied to poles connected by wires for support. The apple trees have been modified to allow an easier harvesting. They are in rows and small tractors go along the lanes between them, while farmhands pick the fruits and put it in the trailer. This photo was taken in Cermes, a hamlet four kms from Meran. Thanks for your kind comments.

What a lovely capture Sandra, I really like the perfect blending of red and gold here. Thank you also for your detailed explanation on the procedures of modern apple growing. I had no idea the process had changed that much over the years and was truly fascinated

That is so interesting! I had always imagined little trees like it was here when I was a child. A very cheerful pic.

A technique grown like espalier is a great idea, just like grapes etc. the first leaves of my grapes have just started to show, remember it's our Spring now! lovely composition of colours, Sandra BB

Beautiful. We lost almost all of our apples here in Michigan because of the drought we had all summer.

Beautiful shot! A pity about the apple trees. I always loved apple orchards, especially the ancient trees with their curly spines. I guess that is progress. The geraniums are gorgeous.
