Traditionally, this card depicts a man and a woman bound to The Devil by chains and iron collars -- yet their hands remain free to remove their bonds, should they simply have the will to do so. Here, she controls humanity through wits and strategy. It is the ultimate game of chess. Each one of us has the power to free ourselves from the things which entrap us -- addictions, overeating, overspending, poor relationships -- but faced with the effort required to win that game, many of us give up entirely and forfeit. This leads to feelings of despair, hopelessness, and worthlessness. Anytime you have felt "stuck," you have probably been dealing with The Devil. The good news is that, while these habits are seductive and magnetic, we all DO have the power to lift our hands and free ourselves. We can play the game and win. The key to doing so is to acknowledge what you're up against and hold tight to your determination. Let go of your willfullness and embrace your willingness to change.
