Description

The sky preparing for Halloween with those spooky wraithlike clouds. Most unusual around here. Captured 10/6/12, early AM, from the parking lot of a nearby strip mall. A good spot to be when photographing to avoid those pesky overhead lines, telephone poles and lamp posts. ZOOM worthy. Shot at a 16:9 aspect ratio for wider coverage. It wasn't that dark at the time so I increased the contrast for dramatic effect. Adieu, and have a nice day.

You really do have a busy sky in your part of the world. We are lucky if we see one in the early morning here. This is a super capture of the clouds and the contrails together.

very appreciating comments, all deserved. I do remember you saying at various times that your area doesn't get dramatic skies like this too often...so I assume that to find them first thing in the morning is a wonderful way to start the day. (I don't know why Chicago gets them so often; and yet Nancy says she doesn't get even this much.) It's a beautiful spread-of-a-shot, your choice of widescreen is perfect, your contrast-work coaxes out the sweeping drama of the clouds---I imagine they are quite dramatic in person, and the only way you can get a camera to capture that feeling is to play with it a little. (Point being that sometimes postwork brings out a reality that cameras can't grab; so postwork can actually help restore what one felt in person.) The silhouetting of the trees---way at the bottom---is wonderful. A 'frame' to the image. And the move from deep blue to the blinding light of the left is fine work. A terrific sky capture all around...If I don't get to it tonight, the next one in the series was also beautiful; and these series of cloud shots in your gallery---with and without contrails---show your eye for such beautiful formations in your backyard. Also, the fact that you stand in a mall-lot also shows the magic: No one would dream you were in a parking lot, because the shot is all about celestial sweep. But in a huge city like L.A., I assume you take open space wherever you can get it. Beautiful choices and seeing, all around.
