Description
I'm unsure of its identity, but it is either a palm or a cycad.
Captured 10/6/12, early AM, within plodding distance of my hallowed haven.
Looks much better via ZOOM.
Since this pic was taken looking into the sun, the flora subject matter came out quite dark, so I brightened the image and increased the contrast a bit. The sun can be seen peeking through a hole in the fronds up near the top and a bit right of center.
-----------------
The term frond refers to a large, divided leaf. In both common usage and botanical nomenclature, the leaves of ferns are referred to as fronds and some botanists restrict the term to this group. Other botanists allow the term frond to also apply to the large leaves of cycads and palms (Arecaceae).

This has come out beautifully with the sun peeking through the leaves. I'm not sure of its identity either but it looks very beautiful.

I love this, Harry! It looks wonderful on zoom. It's not only beautiful, but there is a fun quality to it that has me smiling, even as I admire the wonderful lighting and details. The bright eye of the sun looking back at me and the exuberance of the leaves going every which way, is very joyful. I love the bright outlines on the edges and the satiny texture of some of the leaves. Beautiful capture and perfect fine-tuning of light and contrast!

I'd hoped to be back by last weekend, but work made it hard to write all I wanted to say. I hope to do service to all you've done, with representative choices. And I hope to be back a lot sooner too. Brightening & contrasting a bit is minimal, by postwork standards. Fact is, the shot is packed with wonderful light and texture to begin with, and your postwork no doubt simply coaxed out the image to perfection. You've become the master of early morning light; and here, it lights up an already beautiful tuft of fronds. What people have to remember is that, in real life, this may be a simple tuft of leaves sticking into the street---a sight one passes by often, and which one can easily ignore. But you've made magic of the everyday, which is so prevalent in your gallery; making an everyday sight extraordinary. Or, better, bringing 'out' the extraordinary, as it's inherent in the image. Beautiful dappling of light in the leaves, your composition/crop has very broad leaves on the outer edge, while the smaller intense clusters are in the center (and left) of the fronds, like something's exploding inside the cluster. The fence is crisp and clear, the background house is just enough for background, you give us a big candy trunk, and the rest fades beautifully into the light behind it all. I've never done well controlling sun-flare, but you've got just enough flare to let us know this is the Sun, but it's subtle and respectful of the whole. A beautiful capture of an everyday sight in your city, with a sensual 'unfolding' like it were a swirl of fireworks. Beautiful. Simple, intimate and beautiful.
