Description
Tomorrow, November 12th, is Flavia49's birthday. Like a good wine, getting older she's getting better! So I decided that a fine example for this truth is this entrance to an old stube in Meran.
The Stube (German) or Stua (Italian Northeastern dialects, for stove)is a completely wainscoted room, walls, floor and ceiling, typical of Alpine areas such as Valtellina, Trentino, Dolomites and South Tirol in Italy, as well as Austria and Germany.
Since once it was the only area heated by a stove (usually a giant ceramic thing, hence the name) was a room in the southern part of a house, most of the daily activities took place here.
In the Middle Ages wealthier people divided the kitchen, with its smoky hearth and cooking mess, from this room heated by the ceramic stove, often a very beautiful one, which became the parlor. In the more expensive coach inns and pubs it became the common room. Today it's a name for restaurants and breweries attracting customers with a penchant for traditional food, fine beer and wine, and pleasant old-fashioned furniture.
This entrance in Meran, South Tirol, is part of the old town, and probably was built in the 15th-16th centuries. There are some modern signs, such as the bulb light, the back of an air conditioner and an extinguisher. Otherwise, you can imagine weary ostlers and potboys running back and forth, and buxom waitresses busy to waive around the tables carrying their tankards to customers on a market day. Cheers!
Thanks for your kind comments.

A very inviting image Sandra. Yes, I could use a good hot meal and warm fire. Perhaps a draught of the local red vintage. Yes, I like this image.

Wonderful image and information. I love the lines and depth, the many arches of different shape, the curved walls and steps. The wear of the steps is very interesting. Two look much more worn than the rest. If rooms could remember what has happened in them, these walls would be saturated with the joys and heartaches of many lives. Beautiful capture.

You did really great work here!

A huge and belated happy birthday to Flavia, whose writing and art are always so inventive and intelligent. (There's always so much going on in her images. I hope to get to her before I step down...reading writing is harder for me now, because of my concentration, but I'm going to try.) I just love the shot, the slightly skewed angle, the light of the stairwell on the right as contrast to the deep cellar-like hues in the rest of the shot. I like how you got the arches from an angle that makes them feel like protectors---I assume they feel that way in person--and let the wall spill out to us, on the left bottom. And the parallel of the stairwell opening with the entrance next to it (though further back). I also like the intense reddish yellow light in the background, and the intense light on the wall, both front and midway. A mysterious, eerie and very 'interior' shot---that is, it feels like an intense interior, a whole world 'inside'. Love the shot. And also the description. I imagined, along that long wall on the left, a series by Andy Warhol---just for contrast. (Yeah, not a great idea!) That's one intense wall. Very evocative shot, and another journey into time from you. And an enticing image for Flavia, who after all travels through worlds in her words and art. Happy birthday again, Flavia! A wonderful upload.
