Description
Dirt Clod Wars Of 77 (For mikeerson) This dedication is for my friend Mike Anderson (mikeerson) who is one of my favorite artists in the gallery. Mike has an incredible sense of humor, along with a big heart. He uses this gift to make people feel better by making them laugh. Mike's gallery is fantastic, and filled with some of the most thought provoking works out there. He is able to take almost any dramatic situation and find a light hearted way to look at it. He is also all about helping other people, as I personally can attest to. Mike shared this story with me from when he was a boy, and I wanted to share it with my friends. His memory of this time is crystal clear, and he even provided me with a sketch of the scene in his memory. I hope you enjoy his story, and may God watch over all of you who are going through difficult times.
The year was 1977, and the place was a small lot across from the apartment from where Mike lived. This was the location for one of the most epic battles of modern times. Mike waited patiently for his best friend Bert to finish lunch so they could begin. Soon Bert came running from his home, past his Father's truck. He had with him an armload of G.I. Joe's, ready to face off against Mike. Both combatants knew the rules, and took time to carefully place their forces on top of the large rock formation in the lot. Next they prepared their arsenals by going around the lot pulling up (Dirt Clods) from the ground. At last the battle began, and in almost no time at all there were casualties on both sides. Bert sensed danger, as his forces didn't seem up for the fight on this day. He looked on in horror as his troops were literally falling like dolls in front of him. All of this was happening despite his faithful dog (Nome) cheering him on with every throw. Mike was now sensing victory was near, and with a strategically placed shot sent the last of Bert's troops to meet his maker. Bert gasped in shock as Mike raised his arms in victory. Still the outcome should have been clear from the start as Mike was wearing his lucky #7 Craig Morton jersey on this day. Just like his hero, Mike's aim was true, and he had won the big game. Hope you enjoyed Mike's story, and my dedication for him.
Dave

I was so delighted to see that you had posted. I'm sorry it has taken me SO long to comment. This is marvelous, such a fun image and story! I like the set up in the story, the feeling of Mike and Bert's excitement and concentration on preparing for battle. Your image, at the moment of victory, has wonderful elements of both that moment, and the battle just waged. The expressions are so funny, Bert, with dirt clod in hand, just realizing that it is too late, and Mike elated that the battle is won. Wonderful detail of the action. Dirt clods are lined up, ready for use and littered among fallen combatants. Wonderful positions of the fallen, with a lot of variety. Great composition and attention to detail. The large rock formation, (which is bound to have been a part of many games of imagination), and the boys and battle, fill the image. Behind them are the signs of ordinary daily life, a home, a work truck, and a mailbox waiting with mail. It's this wonderful attention to detail as you tell your friends' stories that bring them so richly to life. Another wonderful and rich story, Dave. I love it!

I happy to look into your gallery to see this wonderful story. Guess all boys had stories some what like this. mine is there was no friend to play with. plus i had fireworks to shoot and blow up the little plastic soldiers. No big GI Joe's. Yes I used dirt when I had no fireworks. But still no friends. It ok as I got a lot of friends now. yes mikeerson did not post in a long time. Thanks for telling stories like these.
