Description
Surprise Arch is located near the end of the Fiery Furnace hike. We walked through a narrow gap between sheer cliff walls & the arch became visible only well into the gap. Though it's a large & dramatic arch, it wasn't discovered until 1963, over 30 years after Arches opened (initially as a National Monument, then later to become a National Park). It reportedly got it's name because the expedition that discovered it had camped under it at night without realizing it was there & woke up to find it in the morning...
