Description

Another photo while fishing at the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. The game is to reel in the fish so that the alligators do not steal your fish right off the hook. The old rule was that the game wardens can take away our fishing license if we feed the alligators. But once you reach your 65th birthday, we do not require a fishing license in a freshwaters in a national park or refuge. So starting in 2013, there is now a fine of $150 for feeding the alligators. So keeping the grackles out of the bait box, not feeding the alligators and keeping an eye out for the game wardens, it is a full time job. This is a fresh water bass, I am told by the experts, and s/he was trying to avoid being caught and not get eaten by the alligators. This bass was about 20 inches (51 cm) long and with all that was going on, got away. We did catch a bunch of blue gills and released them all, safely out of the reach of the alligators. Zoom works and we do fish from an elevated platform, high above the waterline. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

yes you for sure do not want to feed the gators with yourselfs too. I fish off a bank one time and a gator got between me and the boat. good thing some one came in a boat and help me out. i never going to do that again.

A healthy looking specimen! Super pic, too. How interesting that you don't need a licence in retirement.

That looks a great fish, as for feeding the alligators perhaps you should, can I suggest grackle and game warden pie. And watch your back those alligators sound sneaky.

Bad enough these poor fish have to avoid the cleverly-designed lures but they have to avoid alligators too! Tough place to be a fish! Like trying to live life as a cod near Newfoundland!

Shows what I know, I would have pegged it for a carp. But then I've only fished a bit, and never caught anything other than striped bass, catfish and flounder. Excellent shot of this beauty trying to elude certain death!

WOW - I really do like this 'Symphony in Blue' Dana, - and I rather see a photo of this gorgeous specimen, then seeing it being snapped up by anything or anyone ... BB ... mind you, I love eating fish! in fact any type of seafood, but I could never go out to fish for it ... I leave that to the real fishermen ;P Very interesting, what Jeff F. has to say about the size and weight of it!

Great capture and story Dana. With all the rules and regulations to observe and comply, plus with an eye out for the gators - and the wardens it is keeping you from getting bored!
