Description

A Western Scrub Jay perched on a fence in my backyard (our property is actually open & unfenced, this is just part of a small kennel area we used to use when we had dogs). It turns out that this species is unusually intelligent - here's some info from Wikipedia: "Recent research has suggested that Western Scrub Jays, along with several other corvids, are among the most intelligent of animals. The brain-to-body mass ratio of adult Scrub Jays rivals that of chimpanzees and cetaceans, and is dwarfed only by that of humans. Scrub Jays are also the only non-primate shown to plan ahead for the future, which was previously thought of as a uniquely human trait. Other studies have shown that they can remember locations of over 200 food caches, as well as the food item in each cache and its rate of decay. Western scrub jays also summon others to screech over the body of a dead jay, according to new research from the University of California, Davis. The birds' cacophonous "funerals" can last for up to half an hour.". Please zoom...

Smart, indeed! That's a remarkable skill set. I can find things in the fridge or at the grocery store, and have a pretty comprehensive knowledge about rates of decay based on my life experience, but if my food was in 200 places over a square mile, I'm afraid most of it would rot before I figured out where it was! Smart, and very attractive as well. Thanks for the info!
