Description

To answer some questions. While trimming our Roebelenii Palms, one of their spines caught my right hand, in that fleshy area between my thumb and my wrist. Roebelenii Palms also known as Phoenix Roebelenii, Dwarf Date Palm, Pigmy Date Palm and Miniature Date Palm are in the palm family (Arecacea/Palmae). They are single stemmed palms but most are sold in tubs with 2 to 5 palms. Most people, including myself, believed that they grow naturally with multiple stems. We have 7 groups of these palms on our property, planted in clumps of 2s and 3s. I have seen them, in giant terracotta pots, in office lobbies and malls. They grow very slowly and reach heights of 8 to 10 feet (2.4 to 3.1 meters). The stems are topped with a dense head of bright green pinnate leaves that grow to about 4 feet (1.2 meters) in length and it looks very graceful in a gentle breeze. Lower leaflets are modified into sharp pointed 2 to 4 inches (5-10 cm) spines. It was one of these spines that caught my right hand. Cream colored flowers are followed by small black dates on the female plants - male flowers are borne on separate plants. Some information from FloriData.COM. The top half of this collage is the top of a double stem palm. The bottom is my good hand in among the spines. The good news is that there was no infection but I am now typing with my left hand and one finger on my right hand Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana
