Description

Found these two Emus, at an ice cream and fruit stand near the entrance to the Everglades National Park in south Florida. The emu is the largest bird native to Australia and is the second largest extant bird in the world by height, after its relative, the ostrich. The emu is common over most of mainland Australia. The soft feathered, brown, flightless birds reach up to 6.6 feet (2 meters) in height. They have long thin necks and legs. Emus can travel great distances at a fast trot and, if necessary, can sprint at 31 mph (50 km/h). Their long legs allow them to take strides of up to 9 feet (275 cm). They are nomadic and may travel long distances to find food. They feed on a variety of plants and insects, but have been known to go for weeks without food. Emus ingest stones, glass shards and bits of metal to grind food in the digestive system. They drink infrequently, but take in copious fluids when the opportunity arises. Emus will sit in water and are also able to swim. They are curious birds who do not sleep continuously at night but in several short stints sitting down. Info from Wikapedia. Photo taken about 5 years ago, with my old Minolta. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

That's one fast bird! (or two) ;) and they have such gorgeous looking feathers (not seen here), ahem ... maybe you can show us another pic with those feathers, please ? I wonder, if you have ever spotted their cousins, the flight-less Cassowary bird, originally from New Guinea - more colourful, but dangerous! we have got them here as well ... BB

Amazing, they must have a stomach of steel, Dana. Your two photo's are so very special to watch, such cute too, with their hairdo. I love this, although their eyes lay a bit in the dark, but that turquoise-light blue color is just fantastic in it, my friend.
