Description
I really like this one.....taken at last years Waddington Air Show with Rob. To set the scene....we'd seen a couple of displays and we saw these take off as another display began. As that finished the commentator said " now, if you look straight ahead".....The area around Waddington is very flat and you can see for miles. With no planes in sight I remembered The Red Arrows 'they're behind you' entrance and I spun round. My feet were facing ahead and I was twisted almost 180 degrees at the waist when I caught them as they blasted overhead.....this really does count as a 'snapshot'.....and who are they ?
The 53rd Air Demonstration Group, nicknamed Black Eagles, the flight display team of the Republic of Korea Air Force based at Wonju AB, Gangwon Province.
The ROKAF Aerobatic Team has performed on various occasions of National ceremonies and this has been fully encouraged and supported by the nation. The permanent team was initially formed on December 12, 1994 and flew six Cessna A-37B Dragonfly airplanes. The team was disbanded temporarily after the 2007 Seoul Air Show and was reformed upon the arrival of their new T-50 Golden Eagle aircraft which were delivered in 2010.The KAI T-50 Golden Eagle is a family of South Korean supersonic advanced trainers and multi-role light fighters, developed by Korea Aerospace Industries with Lockheed Martin. The T-50 is South Korea's first indigenous supersonic aircraft and one of the world's few supersonic trainers. Development began in the late 1990s, and its maiden flight occurred in 2002. The aircraft entered active service with the Republic of Korea Air Force in 2005.
The T-50 has been further developed into aerobatic and combat variants, namely T-50B, TA-50, and FA-50. The F-50 is another advanced fighter variant being considered. The T-50B serves with the South Korean air force's aerobatics team. The TA-50 light attack variant has been ordered by Indonesia. Additional export orders are being pursued by Iraq, Poland, and Spain. The Philippines has begun contract negotiations to order the FA-50 variant. The T-50 is also being marketed as a candidate for the United States Air Force's next-generation T-X trainer program.
Following this display on July 1st, The Black Eagles were awarded the Boeing Trophy for best display at the 17th Waddington International Air Show. The following weekend at RIAT the Black Eagles were awarded the King Hussein Memorial Sword, for the "Best Overall Flying Demonstration" and the 'As The Crow Flies' Trophy at the awards ceremony of the Royal International Air Tattoo, not bad for their first and probably only appearance on the British Airshow Circuit.
Yes it's Airshow season once again, so more of these leading up to Legends in 4 weeks.........

Snap shot indeed! Excellent photo, Neil! Like out of a story book. And as for the instructional/educational text, again, excellent work! Strange, I've never heard of these fellows, but, Sweden isn't the country to be in when it comes to presentations like this, and this kind of hardware. Had they been North Korean, well, maybe the media here would take notice (they always side with the "other" side). My hat's off to the great pilots! Keep up the good work! :-)

Huh? Didn't realize that Korea had a fighter of its own or its own acrobatic flight team. Good for them! (South Korea is one of my favorite countries. Was stationed at Kimpo AB, which is now Seoul International Airport!)
