Description

This is the motta of Salvarosa (Salvarosa mound/barrow), a funerary mound in a tiny hamlet near Castelfranco Veneto (Treviso Province), built during the Bronze Age. And it is also a slide for the same conference I made the previous one I posted (Buffetto Mound 8). In Scotland and ireland these mounds are thought to be the fairies' dwellings. They are called Sidhe in Irish and Sith in Scottish Gaelic, a word referred both to the mound and the fairy people. Sídhe pronounced shee, modern Irish: si; Scottish Gaelic: sith) is a Gaelic word possibly used as a safely euphemistic reference to Scottish Gaelic siodhe, referring first to earthen mounds that were thought to be home to a supernatural race related to the fey and elves of other traditions, and later to these inhabitants themselves. The "people of the mounds" are more correctly referred to as the Daoine Sidhe or Daoine Sith and are variously believed to be the ancestors, the spirits of nature, or the goddesses and gods themselves. There are a number of words in Italian to refer to these mounds, such as motta, motera, muttiron, etc. all from a Northern Italian Celtic word identical to the Scottish and Irish Gaelic word 'mothran' (meaning: a tuft of trees, a horrifying cry, a mound, a wooded bog, etc.), but none is similar to sidhe/sith. Anyway, there are many stories about fairies living in the streams, caves, woods, bogs etc., all of them usually near these mounds, even if there is no story about the mound as the fairies' specific dwelling in our region. These faieries are called Anguane and other local names. These names are related to the Welsh name Angwyn (gwyn, "white; blessed; holy" + an, an intensifying prefix). So Anguane can be translated The Blessed Ones. Thanks for your kind comments.

I had forgotten how wide spread the Celts were through Europe once upon a time. There influence seems to touch and link almost every European culture into the present day.

Beautiful image and postwork. I love the tree. The mound, tree, fairy, and birds all seem to be connected and in communion with each other. There is a feeling of the close ties between them. Very lovely work.
