Description

Bow Lake is a small lake in the western Canadian Rockies at an altitude of 6,299 feet (1920 meters). The Lake is 1.239 square miles (3.21 kmÂ²). Crowfoot Mountain is the backdrop for Bow Lake and the peak is at an elevation of 10,023 feet (3,055 meters). The limestone silt that has collected at the base of the mountain, is caused by erosion, and contributes to the amazing colors in the lakes of the Banff and Jasper National Parks, Alberta, Canada. The silt has been ground so fine that it remains suspended in the water and reflected light created the colors seen in my previous posts. The Crowfoot Glacier has receded so much that only small areas remain high up on the mountain. The dark yellow clouds are seen as taken on this heavily overcast day. Bow Glacier is located to the left of Crowfoot Mountain and is called an outflow glacier because it hangs down from the Wapta Icefield. The runoff from the glacier supplies water to Bow Lake and the glacier has been a state of steady retreat for the past 160 years. Between the years 1850 and 1953, the glacier retreated an estimated 3,600 feet (1,100 meters). This photo was taken from the side of the Icefields Parkway in August 1988 and recently scanned.
