Description

This is a photo of Lake Placid, in the Adirondack Mountains, Essex County, NY, US. I took this photo near the top of nearby Whiteface Mountain (4,867 feet (1,483 meters) in June 1966 with a slide camera. I would like some honest comments as to the quality of this photo. I have over 2,000 slides to convert and if this does not pass your evaluation, I will only convert the family slides. This slide was not selected for this test, it was the first slide in the box. These slides have survived being stored in seven unheated attics for all these years. The village of Lake Placid had a population of 4,549 in 2000. Lake Placid hosted the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. The bluish tint comes from all those years in the heat of the attic! Some information from Wikipedia. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

I think it could be saved by conversion to BW. I will check and see if psp one step"fixer?" will help. well I could bring some of the green out for the trees but the horizon was still washed out

It's a beautiful view, I love the light on the water way down below. I don't know about fixing, I'd put it in Photoshop and play with the light and colour adjustments, or maybe Topaz Adjust.

I did a quick check with photoshop CS5. I too could bring out some of the green, but not the horizon. I have a lot of slides too, as my mom gave me all of my parents slides which also include some of my grandparents slides. And I have some negatives as well. It is a very time consuming project.

Yeah I reckon it's good Dana. Maybe just correct the colour cast, and there are also a few dust marks etc at top left. But basically I think it's a really good shot. I like the way the horizon fades into the distance.

Magnificent scenery. I'd love to be there. Don't think the bluish tint takes away any of the quality of the image. The spots are barely noticeable. It seems to me as good a photo as you can get. :)

Well I think it´s worth to save, because you can fix it using levels of photoshop, and also the B&W as Richard said is a great idea. I just checked using my PSP and Richard is right about horizon. Great color in FG but horizon remains blue and brillant.

I thank you all for being so candid about this posting. I did not play with this slide as I wanted to see your comments first. I did get a new paint brush (very soft) to brush off the dust and lint. I did check camera details and was very surprised that RR came up with things like shutter speed. The camera was a Kodak 400. Please keep in mind that the summer heat of the attic has permanently destroyed the real colors!

The 'washed out' horizon is what you normally see with aerial perspective! Do as many as you can spare the time for, Dana. I too have a lot, and I will do the family ones first.

I find it difficult to say. There does not seem to be much sharpness anywhere in the image which suggests possible camera movement. As well there are many spots that will need fixing because we are much less forgiving these days due to vast improvements in photography. The next slide may be much better, but my experience with the same thing showed that my closeup shots fared much better than the distant scenery photos. I would suggest you try quite a few before you give up on them because some will be better than others. Good luck!

I think all the advice you need is in the above. There is nothing wrong with the picture that a little alteration of the colours in 'variations' in photoshop wouldn't put right. Hope this might help Dana.

I think this is a very worthy capture, dear Dana. Well worth the work you will do on all the other slides. Beautiful lake and capture. Hugs for all day. Di. xx

I don't think the shot is to bad dana nice view a little soft but for a slide that old not to bad, some of the colour can be corrected as suggested by others the blue in the distance is normal for film that old ,cold wont effect your slides as much as heat or damp also in the processing when film weren't washed enough and left traces of chemicals in the emulsion can cause colour changes.I know these things. As you have so many I would suggest you tackle the amount first, trawl through them and put the rubbish in the bin, then sort what's left into three piles not good but keep, good but work on if you feel like it and the best work on these first. BE CRITICAL. BE CRITICAL, BE CRITICAL If all have faded to the same degree you can correct one and do a batch process, correct one average shot and use it to correct the rest after scanning.some scanning programs allow you to correct general colour in the scanner also some will remove a lot of those spots. I use Lightroom for most corrections and It has a spot removal tool but photoshop and most of the others have similar tools, you can use the dodge and burn tools the darken the sky but start weak and build up density. I think I've said enough, have a great time sorting.

although i'm not a great lover of photoshop, maybe a little colour manipulation to lose the blue cast would be worth a look. As to the quality of the picture composition and subject wise, a great picture indeed.

I think if these images are dear to you and you have the time then I say go for it. The colors can be brought back out to some extent and to the degree that you are most satisfied with. as for the washed out areas well it is what it is but it can be replaced with skyline if you wanted, it all depends on what it is that you want out of the image. I did a 5 minute touchup on this image with very simple adjustments and it looks not so bad, here is the link for you to have a look at so you see it can be saved. as was mentioned above a few dodge and burn techniques and contrast and saturation adjustments and some cleanup will do wonders for your images http://i42.tinypic.com/2090igo.jpg

Personally, I like the image, but then, my eyesight is not the best. Sometimes, less than perfect images can be fun starter points for playing with filters. I was considering playing around with it.. would you mind? this inspires me to take a new look at my old pics too.

I LOVE IT, BUT I'D USE A FILTER TO MAKE IT SHARPER. BUT IT'S ONLY A QUESTION OF TASTE....

The view is beautiful and I think that with some post work it will do. In my opinion every photo or image has to be saved for the next generations, so to digitalize the old photos is a way to do it.

Dana, this is a beautiful picture. I love the composition. If I had the slides, I would definitely convert them (I lost about 2,000 slides I took in SEA). You could try to post some in b&w or you could try what I have done in the past to get the blue tinge out. Go to photoshop, image, adjustments and auto color. When I used this it restored a natural color to the photo. I would definitely convert these photos, for one, they are almost 50 years old and this one is beautiful!! Sig...

right, the quality isn't very good, but it is an old shot and mine are looking the same! you could delete the little black points in the far and give the image a bit more contrast and colors to the greens! but quality is not all! it is interesting to see places i never will see in my life! so don't worry about quality! I want to see all of your imressive captures! ;o) Here I am stunning about the far view! ist breathtaking! ;o)
