Description
This is a close view of the mound inside the circular walled/palisaded moat at Castelminio. The top is more or less a square of leveled dirt, with steep slopes. A probe found the remains of a brick building possibly dating the late Bronze Age. We don't know whether it was used later as 'fincara' or a 'roccolo' that is a mound where a small building was built and nets to snare birds put all around as a circular labyrinth. Inside the building they put cages full of singing birds to lure their mates to come. In general these traps were called 'roccolo' (plural roccoli) in general, and 'fincara' if they were specialized to snare finches. Fincara is the local term, related to the German fink, English finch.
The guy climbing the mound is my friend Simon, the archaeologist. I also added a ghost building.
Thanks for your kind comments.

This present series is equally enticing as the previous ones. The mound is much more pronounced than the previous ones (what we saw in your pictures, at least). And I much appreciate your details about the possible bird traps as well as the cages inside. The shot looks like a climb to a magical place (the ghost building helps with that), and, as in many of your other shots, the vegetation is lush and vivid. I assume you've done that (with camera and postwork) to evoke the sense of magic, legend, imagination, etc, that people have imbued into these places over the centuries. Imbued representations, in other words, thus the deep greens, the deep blues, etc. A most evocative shot. Sandra, I want to do one more, a pure photograph if I can find one, just because it's part of your varied offerings. I've been interrupted 3 times while doing these comments, but I've been here a long time tonight in order to revisit what you offer. But before I go, a fav for all the archaeological series I covered here, and for your considerable effort, your ability to condense a huge amount of information and insight into some salient facts and tales, and for the love you display in all of it. Now off to my last image...

As is often the case, reading your post sent me off to do some Google searches. I had never heard of a roccolo or fincara. What I found was both interesting images of what roccoli look like and disturbing images of their use today (mostly illegal). I also found out about a group that is fighting their use today called Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS). Wonderful image! I like the ghost building. It looks like your friend Simon is climbing into the past. But then I guess he does that a lot. :)
