Description

When I joined the Navy, the pay was only $78 a month. By becoming a helicopter crewman added $55 a month and by signing up for shore patrol, when the aircraft carrier pulled into port, added $25 a day plus the local restaurants would feed us well if we kept out the trouble makers. I was able to partner up with this Jamaican policeman on a number of visits and that made it all the easier. Sorry that I can not remember his name but I was able to see things in Jamaica that most sailors did not know existed. This is another converted slide from June 1966. A Kodak 404 slide camera. This photo will not zoom Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Nice shot and great info Dana! My first job, working in a printing shop for the summer circa 1959, paid me $16.05 for a full week of six days and I still have that first cheque. I worked in the basement and it was dark when I got to work and dark again when I left, but that was a lot of money to me then at age 15. When I graduated in electronics my first job paid $330 per month and figured I had it made. I didn't.

Superb shot. Great quality for a scan. I've heard from friends who were in Jamaica, that Kingston today is the city with the most crime rate of the island.

Dana, this is a fabulous capture. First, I also want to thank you for your service, but like me, by joining the Navy you were one step ahead of Uncle Sam and the draft board. My pay was only either $70 or $76 a month, but that was at the beginning of 1963. Just like me, you took advantage of things to see. I am glad that you take the trouble of converting (scanning) some of your old pictures. This is a beautiful shot of this Jamaican policeman but so is your previous shot of the waves, as seen from the carrier deck. Those waves must have look much higher if you stood on the deck of the destroyer. Keep converting Dana, you have some very interesting pictures, Sig...
