Description

On our way to the Penobscot River, in upper Maine, for a class 5 white water river rafting adventure, we passed a river clogged with logs. Maine had some of the largest paper mills in the United States. Loggers strip the trees of all of the branches and then cut down the tree into the river. The trees float down river to the paper plant and are ground into pulp for paper and other paper type products. That is the simple explanation. Photo converted from a 1970s slide. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favorites and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

I have seen this type of logging method in the pacific northwest as well, but never where the entire river was so completely covered with them. Thanks for sharing this great old slide.

That lot would keep a wood burner going for a few weeks.

That really is a 'log jam'! Super shot Dana and just a pity so many trees have to suffer.

Jeff, these trees and fast growing and soft wood ( not hardwood like oak) and perfect to make pulp for paper. The log jam is intentional so that the water logged trees are easier to crush on the way to becoming paper!

That's a lot of wood. Great shot and very interesting. It is sad to see how many trees had to die for the paper-hungry people.

WOW - you wouldn't want to be caught anywhere near these logs, while 'white water river rafting' ;P log-hopping would be easier ;)) ... fine image to tell the story Dana, BB BTW - no, I don't have the Microsoft Excel, sorry!
