Description

John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born in the same state as I was and less than 100 miles away. He was a candidate for President of the United States the first time I was old enough to vote and I voted for him. On January 20, 1961, I was in Washington, DC to watch him being sworn it. I was there at 6:30 AM so I could get a spot in the free section. It had snowed the night before and it was freezing cold. If I remember, Robert Frost was reading a poem when I took my only photo of the ceremony. Chief Justice Earl Warren administered the oath of office. The swearing in ceremony took place on the low balcony just above the military band. Sorry about the poor quality. I used a Kodak 404 slide camera and this posting was converted from that over 52 year old slide. It will zoom! Today was the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination! Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favorites and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

very historical picture. what makes it excellent is it has survived all these years and you are able to show it now. In 61, I was still in school so I was not old enough to vote. when he was assassinated I was in a college class and that is where I heard it

I was in 6th grade at that time. I remember the entire class was stunned at the news - I mean what 11-12 year old knows what assassination was at that time (yeah we read about Lincoln but it wasn't the same as hearing it first hand) Great photo - I'm glad it survived all these years

I was still only 7 at the time, but I do remember it being the only thing on TV .... played over and over for 3 days straight. At the time I did not fully understand the impact. I was sorry he died, but after a couple of days I wished they would watch and talk about something else. My kids probably felt the same way on September 11th. Thanks for sharing this great old slide ,,,a little slice of history.

A very nice commemorative shot to honor JFK Dana! As they have said so many times, everyone who was old enough to vote when JFK was assassinated will certainly remember where and when they heard the news. For me, in Canada, I was walking south down 102 Street near Jasper Avenue in Edmonton. Many people were weeping in the streets and I was completely devastated by that news for a very long time. I don't think anyone ever heals from something like that. I doubt many Americans realize how many Canadians suffered with you in those sad times.

A historic moment. I was 10 years old when JFK was running for president in 1960. He campaigned in my neighborhood in NY & I managed to get up close & shake his hand. I was in my junior high school auditorium for some kind of program when the principal interrupted it & announced that the president had been shot & killed. The next time I shook a president's hand was 48 years later, when Barack Obama was campaigning in Medford, Oregon in 2008. My wife & I went to his first inauguration with a bunch of friends (our Republican congressman got us tickets!) & it was freezing cold then too, but worth it to attend that historic moment...

That's a lot of cold people, just shows you how much a draw card he was, I was way too young, but remember seeing his assassination on T.V., I was only 3, but it left an impression. Great quality for an old slide ! ~Cheers~

Quite an impressive building and a memorable event as it was known worldwide ... and I just witnessed a replay of it, on the anniversary of his assassination on TV tonight ;( so sad indeed, that just anybody can own a gun, be it whether one is normal or a psychopath ? BB (you wrote assignation, I am not too sure what you meant ? - I had to google it because my English grammar is not too good !)

Wonderful photo of this historic event. I voted for "I am not a crook" Nixon that year:) I was a tank company commander in November 1963...I had all of my men out on a PT (Physical Training) course when the fateful word came down. I was handed a formal announcement, called the troops together and read the official statement that our commander-in-chief had been shot. I'll never forget the time and place.

i remember his campaign for President, his inauguration, and remember poor Frost having a terrible time reading his poem since the sun was shining so brightly in his face...i do believe the day he was assassinated was one of the worst days in my life...i was 17 at the time, so i too remember all the details quite well...the world changed that day, and not necessarily for the better...by the way, that's a great capture--treasure it.
