Description

John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born in the same state as I was and less than 100 miles away. He was a candidate for President of the United States the first time I was old enough to vote and I voted for him. On January 20, 1961, I was in Washington, DC to watch him being sworn it. I was there at 6:30 AM so I could get a spot in the free section. It had snowed the night before and it was freezing cold. If I remember, Robert Frost was reading a poem when I took my only photo of the ceremony. Chief Justice Earl Warren administered the oath of office. The swearing in ceremony took place on the low balcony just above the military band. Sorry about the poor quality. I used a Kodak 404 slide camera and this posting was converted from that over 52 year old slide. It will zoom! Today was the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination! Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favorites and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

It is sad how many statesmen had to have their lives sacrificed on the altar of their nations... A great-looking image in its own right with the grandiose architecture, this photo ought to be of great historical significance. It may be seen as a treasure someday!

Great photo of this historical event Dana. I lived in Toronto, Canada at the time of his swearing in ceremony, but I couldn't speak much English and didn't watch any TV. At the time of his assassination I was in the Air Force, stationed at Paine Field, WA. I remember this very clearly. We came back from lunch and both of our civilian secretaries were crying. For his funeral the entire base marched and there was a missing man formation fly-over with F-102s. The Special Forces (Green Berets) lost a friend and supporter. I am glad you are scanning those pictures Dana, this is of historic value. On another note, I didn't recognize you, you sure aged lol!

The image quality is not bad considering it's age. I too recall the day of Kennedy's assassination all too well. Something forever burned into my memory. I was fairly young at the time, but clearly recall the shock and dismay. It almost felt as is if the world had suddenly stopped.
