Description

The Great Blue Heron is a large wading bird, common near the shores of open water and in wetlands over most of North and Central America as well as the Caribbean and the GalÃ�Â¡pagos Islands. They are very common in south Florida but rarely seen in Europe. It is the largest North American heron, head to tail length of 36 to 54 inches (91 to 137 cm), a wingspan of 66 to 79 inches (167 to 201 cm), a height of 45 to 54 inches (115 to 138 cm) and a weight of 4.6 to 7.9 pounds (2.1 to 3.6 kg). These two photos were taken on the same day as my last two postings. The right photo was while s/he was walking the edge of the lake looking for fish and frogs. The left photo was in direct sunlight trying to warm up after wading in the lake. Some info from Wikipedia. This collage will zoom and provide better details! Two very nice shots Dana. A grey heron came into my garden about a month ago and took four of my six large goldfish. It came back next morning for the other two but I had taken precautions!

There is something very cool about their appearance, like high fashion models on a catwalk ... if they swallow a fish - you would surely see it going down their throats and always know how many they had for dinner, hmmm ... just a curious notion ;) fine images Dana, thanks for sharing them with us, BB

Great capture Dana. You know we have them here in the surrounding agricultural area of Phoenix too. They usually hang around along the irrigation ditches of the fields!
