Description
My wife (she's the one with the pink hat) & a few of our friends posing on a hike in Lava Beds National Monument in northern California. One of the women (I won't embarrass her by saying which one she is) doesn't like to have her picture taken when she's not wearing a bra, so she insisted that everyone cover their breasts for this photo. We hike with this group often & it's become somewhat of a standing joke that we've repeated a few times in other locations.
BTW, that pole in the background is a Modoc medicine flag. I did a google search & found a few other photos of it, but couldn't find an explanation of it's purpose...

very humorous. it would seem like hiking, wearing a bra would be the way to dress for a lady

terrific friends-photo, with one of those inside jokes that make us feel we're invited in on something special. Very funny that even the men are covering their breasts. Great you shared this with us. (We had a group of musicians years back, and one of the pianists had a very heavy left hand---she played the bottom notes with explosive power. So one day we all went to dinner, and---in her honor---we all wore huuuuge plastic hands over our left hands, and kept them there, the whole dinner. This was in an uppity restaurant, and our hands brought lots of stares, which we loved no end.) As for the medicine flag, I studied a bunch of Native American symbols and objects, but can't say too much about this flag. I just know that the carvings and paintings on these things often come from deep healing symbols, and can contain herbs, barks, etc, which are known to heal. They can be carried to evoke loving and healing spirits, or to ward off evil spirits. I think they function similarly to medicine bags or even rattles (which can even contain the skin that ancestors cut off of themselves, so that their descendents would carry pieces of their life with them, forever) Nice to see it there, in any case, in the midst of that sweeping and desolate landscape...

I like it that they all stood united for this ritual photo! Now I have to go research the Modoc medicine flag! :o)
