Description

This started as a lighting experiment. But I can't help myself, and it ended up being a study in mood capture... And some fun with Carrara's dynamic hair... The only lighting here is a custom HDRI I created for this, plus a single bulb, which is set to only affect the dynamic hair (I needed more back-lit highlights on the hair and fur and it was simpler to add the bulb than to keep tweaking the HDRI). The snow and DOF were added in post. Other post is mostly layer compositing and a few stray hairs painted in to mix up otherwise too even-looking fly-away strands. Does it (the image) work? Does it look natural? Does it convey the mood? Is the setting/environment readable? Credits: V4 with custom morph + Nykta smiles, + a crazy mixture of textures, some of which are from Danae's Dublin Character and Reby Sky's SSS maps (in the glow channel). Eye lashes are Carrara dynamic hair (to avoid rendering GI's light through transparency.) I used Dynamic Venus Hair by 3DCelebrity as base and then reshaped it all almost completely and added my own dynamic hair models. All hair and fur shaders are my own. Cute3D's Lady Peacoat (changed shading domains, added fur and custom shaders). Earrings and bracelet by Fabiana & Lucila (Carrara custom shaders).

Fantastic portrait! Really interesting work on this. The hair looks great. I tried Carrara hair for eyebrows once and failed epically. Eyelashes seems to work well. Over all, very effective.

There is a good atmosphere in your image. For more realism the snow should pile up on the front of her hair, coat and even her nose.

The lights are based on a blurred out HDRI. I had a photo of a city at night. I blurred it to create very soft gradients around all light sources. I then created a darker and lighter versions of the same image (it can be done using Levels or Exposure, both work, I think in this case I used Levels). I then stitched the 3 versions into a single HDRI and cropped it at 2:1 ratio "panorama" (in my case 2000x1000 pixels) as per Mark Bremmer's tutorial available here: http://markbremmer.com/3Bpages/darkarts.html I then tested the lighting it creates using a very simple sphere+plane scene (render it with sky light GI and no other lights and no Ambient or atmosphre) and fiddled with making some segments of my HDRI brighter (in an image editor using Exposure adjustment layer and masks) until I was satisfied with the lights it was giving me on the sphere. The backdrop is cut from the same HDRI at one of the tweaking iterations :). It's all embarrassingly simple, as ususal :).
