Description

This is an older image done with "Unhappily Ever After" theme in mind. I recently reworked it as a technical practice (new rendering and lighting settings for time/looks optimization), and since I didn't post it before, I decided to post it now. Since I have resumed working on this image, I am looking for critique and suggestions for improvement. I hope the situation is easy to understand and I hope the emotions of the characters can be clearly seen. If you find them ambiguous, please let me know, as that is something I would wish to improve. Other areas where I am looking for possible improvements are lighting, composition and texturing, so if you see something that could be done better, please let me know! As always, thank you for stopping by and the a huge thank you to all who take the time to leave a comment! UPDATE: Based on Greywolf44's comment, I changed the lighting and the ghosts a bit. Hope it looks better now. Thank you, Greywolf44!

First thing is people HAVE to look at this full screen. On critique, I'd say you did a great job on this first go round. Textures are marvelous. Lighting is super. One possible change would be cut off the God rays on the far left and far right of the image to give a little more contrast for the interior instead of a sweeping curtain of light from above. And second, maybe dim the two ghost figures slightly. On full view they are almost glass-like, not ghost-like. And lastly (minor), you may move the camera a bit down and to the right to see both bodies a little more. Otherwise, you have a winner in my book. Hope you get some more input and I can't wait to see your final.

Thank you! I have changes the rays and made the ghosts more transparent. Please let me know whether it's better now. (You might need to reload a couple of times for the cashe to update)

Great scene. The ghosts and their pose/expression look great. I get the impression the woman is reluctant to leave but the male character is resigned to moving on. Something in the lighting is washing out the shadows around the bodies giving that area a "quick cg render" look. Guns can make ghosts? Again, very cool image.

Thank you so much for catching it! That was an actual mistake during post (I accidentally put my Shadow pass into a masked layer group, which was removing the shadows that should have been there). Does it look better now? Thank you!

Wonderful place/decor. You've used excellent textures. The poses are interesting and well done. The ghost effet is very nice and I like the rays coming from top. The general lighting helps focusing on the main actors. Excellent work

Not a happy tale! I needed to see it in Full View to get all the pieces, very imaginative and well put together.

This is quite an amazing image! Seeing it Full View tells the story. How did you do the ghost effect ?

In Carrara the ghost effect is easy. But it requires a falloff shader. I used Digital Carvers Guild's Shader Ops Fake Fresnel, but there is a free alternative available from www.sparrowhawke3d.com - edge falloff from the Laboratory plug-ins. I disable all lights (including ambient!) and changed all shaders on the 2 figures to the same one (or almost the same, some required custom alpha maps, like the hair), which is all blanks except for glow, which is a combination the blue color and black with the edge falloff/fake Fresnel as the mixer. With no lights, no GI in the render settings it renders very quickly and the glow channel of the final render is what gets used for the ghosts. I hope this helps. If you have more questions, please ask.

The full size view is marvelous. It creates its own story in your head.

This is incredibly well done. Goes beyond just looking good and actually tells a story.

Nice image. I find my eye dividing time between the ghosts and candle because of the values and clarity. The candle is important because it leads the viewer to explore the scene. I'd suggest fading the ghosts a bit and adding a blur of 1 or 2px so they are in contrast to the clarity of the tomb. Always the visual tension between seen and unseen, sharp and soft.

Thank you, Mark! That's a great idea. I implemented it as best I could. Hopefully it looks better now.
