Description

To get to Cline Canyon took about a 45 minute trudge. Compared to getting into Siffleur Falls this was an easy hike, but still only a few ice climbers make the trek. You may be surprised to learn that these are not waterfalls. Rather these massive ice formations are from springs outcropinig on the sides and top of the canyon. On the left photo you can see an open spring at the base of the cliff. The colors are due to minerals in the rock. This was somewhat of a dangerous place to work. The river would freeze over and then the level would drop and the ice would break up and flow away. You were never sure where the edge really was. Also the presence of springs at stream level meant there was relatively warm water flowing under the ice which could then give way without warning. The water wasn't that deep but you could be in up to your knees and then face a long wet hike out in -15C weather. On the right photo you can see footprints on the ice shelf beneath the cliff. We traded off walking on to the shelf one person at a time to get whatever shots we wanted while the other people waited their turn and kept a half eye open on the person working the ice shelf. Still the place was so exhilerating that any fear was immediately put aside and the focus was on getting some great shots. Yes, we are somewhat crazy where I come from but my friend Bob is certified in backcountry rescue. As long as he is having fun then I am ok; if he starts getting nervous then I start paying more attention to what's up with what we are doing.

Fantastic snowy landscapes. Both excellent, but I think I prefer the one on the right because the water adds a nice contrast to the snow. And I think I see some snow covered boulders (or just heaps of snow or ice) under the waterfall-like formation that look like a seated buddha...

That's fascinating. To my untrained eye, I would have assumed they were waterfalls for sure!

Magnificent shots of this beautiful place, Roxy! I applaud your dedication to your photography, my friend! Wow.... -15 degrees.... Brrrrrr Good that you had someone trained in getting you out of trouble along. I could be really disastrous to get any part of one's body wet in temps like that.

These are some very magical and inspirational shots. Well worth the walk and tip toeing across the ice. The drive up Route 46 to the Poconos along the Delaware has a lot of these "ice falls" but nothing as spectacular as this. Beautiful.

The wildness of this land never ceases to amaze me in shot after shot that you have taken. So many wonders in this place. The first picture to me would make a great Poser background shot to populate with Fantasy Vikings or barbarians. At least that is what comes to me!
