Description

I have more photos from southern California to post, but I thought I'd post one I took today first. A group of wild turkeys - four males & over a dozen females - have been wandering around our property for the last few days & today I thought I'd stalk them with my camera. They tend to scatter quickly when surprised by humans, but I was able to get reasonably close by staying quiet & advancing very slowly. They knew I was there, but didn't feel threatened enough to have to run away. This was about as close as I could get & was shot at full 60x zoom (1200mm equivalent). A very strange looking bird (in my opinion) that wouldn't be out of place in a Star Wars bar scene. I may have a few more turkey photos to post from today's shoot...

Sorry about the ebots: I'm having server problems... An eye-popping shot! Turkeys are almost in a class with platypus's for nature's oddest creatures. (Like they left this one to the weird artist in the back, who filtered the poor bird until it came out looking like this...) I think it's an eye-popping shot, even moreso considering the limitations you dealt with---not being able to get close (because it runs away), and having to use a high zoom: You captured such vividness in its details, it's a triumph. And his twist---the way he-or-she twists their neck---is wonderful. Fine work, Claude. A vivid compelling shot of this odd bird. (I can't believe you have them wandering your property! What a sight! I once wrote a really dumb tale about a turkey in a psychiatrist's office, where the turkey weeps about how awful he looks, and that he doesn't even get to enjoy thanksgiving because humans come after him every November, with machetes. The story wasn't Pulitzer material, trust me, but at least some turkeys liked it...) A really vivid capture.

I came upon this one second (and the second one first) ... it comes from catching up rather than keeping up. I think I like this one even better! The twist really makes it.
