Hi, I'm Andrea, and I'm interested in creatures and plants both wild and tamed, and people of all sorts. I only use a compact digital camera ,as I love being able to get it into a back pocket, and not have to cart heavy kit about. I carry a Panasonic Lumix TZ series, binoculars and a hand lens almost everywhere. Most of my outings are with the dogs so I only use point and shoot.
I am getting the hang of Photoshop, thanks to some very kind folk on RR!
I have a wildlife garden in Bournemouth, Dorset, in the UK, and spend a lot of time there . I retired from teaching art to teenagers a while ago.
I'm now getting some good results with my digi compacts; it took me a while to make the switch from my old film camera, an 1960 ish Pentax Spotmatic, but the mistakes are much cheaper!
I have 4 lodgers, 3 dogs and a parrot who, as at 2017, I have had 40 years.
I has so far had 19 dogs, mostly rescues.

I love to see them cruising along with their wings looking all stately like this. I loved Joyces Grenfells little ditties :o)

Good shot!

Swans always look so majestic, such loyal birds, they should be left alone and not eaten as a free means of food which is the case in some parts of the country. They are protected by the crown but I doubt if that matters too much these days in the protection of these wonderful birds. You can really experience their power when you see them in flight or coming in to land, the power in their wings is amazing. They don't exist on our waters to feed a family of six or more... it's not how we eat in the uk... at least not in the 21st century.

Fascinating comment from Mark (David-Rogers). You have a gentle and quiet capture of one of nature's most graceful beasts, with its wings slightly spread to show the beautiful white "luminescence" inside them. It always looks like its neck is half-sunk in the water, as if that long neck weighs so much the bird can't keep it all above water. Delicate capture, with its beautiful reflection below---also delicate and gentle. A "pondering" swan, like it's lost in thought. (Perhaps you know that, in ancient India, the swan represented enlightenment, because it was considered the only creature who could sip the milk out of water, when milk was suspended in water. They said that because of its beautiful sweeping shape, wisdom in the form of a bird. Thus the swan can be found in a number of Hindu emblems....It's sometimes called "hamsa"; and mythical sages were often called "paramahamsas" because they were considered "the highest of all swans".) I saw the video---a real delight, and a style long lost. I'm aware of her, and I love how she dons that skirt just for the performance---placing it on top of her clothes just for that number. Lovely link for this shot...

They're so different in the water than they are on land, aren't they? This is a grand pose, as if it knows how it looks. Wonderful image!

Superbly super ambiance of elegance, composition and atmosphere in this Tizzy25 pic of the serene swan, as it negotiates its way along the Stour. Which begs the question: just what is a Stour? The name of a lake or river?

They do seem quite stately and peaceful--until they go for a small dog that they find threatening ;p Lovely light in this shot!
