Hi, I'm Andrea, and I'm interested in creatures and plants both wild and tamed, and people of all sorts. I only use a compact digital camera ,as I love being able to get it into a back pocket, and not have to cart heavy kit about. I carry a Panasonic Lumix TZ series, binoculars and a hand lens almost everywhere. Most of my outings are with the dogs so I only use point and shoot.
I am getting the hang of Photoshop, thanks to some very kind folk on RR!Â
I have a wildlife garden in Bournemouth, Dorset, in the UK, and spend a lot of time there . I retired from teaching art to teenagers a while ago.
I'm now getting some good results with my digi compacts; it took me a while to make the switch from my old film camera, an 1960 ish Pentax Spotmatic, but the mistakes are much cheaper! Â
I have 4 lodgers, 3 dogs and a parrot who, as at 2017, I have had 40 years.
I has so far had 19 dogs, mostly rescues.

Wow, that is really special to have this cactus you helped plant with your mother. I would not get rid of it either in your place. It ranks up there with family heirlooms. Perhaps if you have any children or grandchildren that like cacti you could pass it down to their safekeeping along with the story. This is a beautiful photo of it.

Great light of this spiky thing!!!

Oooohh! I love the backlighting. A wonderful photograph of this beautiful but dangerous heirloom! :)

Excellent lighting here Andrea. And I remember those cacti in the greenhouse, one morning I was there when you were taking certain specimens in for the approaching winter, and you told me then how old they were :)
Faemike55
wonderful photo I agree with Tara about the backlighting

Plenty of fond memories there from childhood and the connection is still there to enjoy, they look mighty impressive. Great shots.

WOW it is beautiful, No wonder you cannot bear to get rid of it.

Prickly it is! Ferrocactus Pringlei to you, the back of a porcupine to me. Outstanding lighting and definition in this pic of the greenhouse old timer, A.

Strong sharp spines definitely not something you would want to sit on. Nice shot and great lighting I can even see the cobwebs.
MrsRatbag
The spines are so translucent in the sunlight, I never knew that; what a beauty!

I hope there is someone to will this venerable old cactus to when it's time. It would be a crime to let it die, or to just toss in on the compost heap. back lighting is awesome .. it's one of my fave things!

The light is lovely but the Echinocactus is beautiful. My step-mother has had cactus in her garden for fifty years so I know they can be raised without injury to the skin. She uses heavy gloves that reach up to her elbows.
moochagoo
Really excellent backlight here.

Such a very special photo you made of those ancient needles, Andrea. And so beautiful with the light, one can even enjoy the spider-dreads.

The white version is striking and we had a barrel cactus like this red version. Fantastic with the trace of spider webs!
