Hi, I'm Marilyn. Â I've been posting here on RR for a few years now and thought it was time to update my profile. Â It's been wonderful learning so much from the amazingly talented people here. Â I've had the chance to meet many in person and some have become great and good friends. Â Starting with a Kodak Brownie camera when I was about 7 or 8, moving up to Instamatics, Polaroids, then the Pentax K1000 that really got me on the way, I've been looking at the world thru a lens for a long time. Â Got the bug honestly; my dad was a photographer and gave me the gene!! Â Digital changed the world and I jumped in with both feet. Â You would've gone thru 100's of rolls of film in one day the way we can shoot and delete all day long. Â Progess...it can be awesome sometimes.
At any rate, RR rocks, the talent is over the top and I'm just gonna keep on shooting!!
Thanks for looking and keep those cameras rollin'!!
peace.....marilyn

I've seen the Columbia. I never realized it had waves like this. A great image. Look at the determination in his stride.

Those are very surprisingly large waves for a river. Nice shot...

I grew up fishing around this area. Including the Columbia. And that's one wicked witch if you ain't right with your karma! Great photo!

O Columbia, the gem of the ocean, The home of the brave and the free, The shrine of each patriot's devotion, A world offers homage to thee……. The vertical surfer breaks up the series of horizontal mini wave striations in this photo, Maz.

Yeah, when you said this was the Columbia, I thought, no way. I don't remember ever seeing a river with waves like this. The Mississippi doesn't get anything like this, as I recall...BUT---to the shot. A terrific shot because you have the waves, the wet sand (like glass), and the surfer, and that's the shot: Minimalist, in a strong way. But what an eye you have, here, because the surfer's in his wet suit---all black (or dark blue), by which he stands out from everything else. And then there's his board: The board bursts right out from the scene, blasts forward and gives a totally unexpected accent to the whole. Great shot, Marilyn, I agree with Andrea about the composition, as the direction of the board breaks with the horizontal and vertical elements that dominate the shot. In fact, the board looks like it's plugged in, and radiating a day-glo glow. Terrifically seen and composed (with your inner eye). And keeping him on the edge of the shot is perfect---it allows the long waves to speak to us grandly before we get hit with that board. A real marilyn shot---just terrific.
