Description

This was my entry into the latest Carrara challenge with one of themes being "Don't Fence Me In". It all started with a friend's dream, which she told me on the day when I was thinking about the challenge and the dream seemed to fit the theme rather well. But it was too depressing to work on, and ended up quite disturbing and horrific! Also I feel like I need to add a DISCLAIMER: "The views and opinions expressed in the artwork are those of the characters portrayed and do not necessarily reflect the views of the author" Technical notes: This was quite the usual image for my normal workflow with one exception: Once I had the figures in the scene, I rendered it out in small size, then extracted the depth pass from the render and used it to create a terrain, which was then exported as a low poly object for generating ivy. Ivy Generator is a very cool program, but a bit tough to work with. Using the low poly mesh simplified the process and I created a few vines which followed the shape of my figures rather well to create the growth. I didn't generate the leaves and only added them later in Carrara through custom replicators. Credits: Carrara + PS - Genesis M5 with a custom morph mostly based on David 5, M5 and Genesis body mophs, with a big mixture of adjusted maps, most of which are M5 base, mixed with David 5 normals and Freak veins. - Unshaven for Genesis hair by Mec4D - V4 head with a mixture of textures from different characters (Lana, Amy, Reby Sky) and my own custom morph. - 5 times the ladies Carrara Dynamic hair. - Kids 4 head also with mixed maps for shader and Kaitey for Kids 4 morph. - Stock Carrara dynamic hair (the ponytail seen on the kid's head), re-brushed, re-shaped, re-cut and re-shaded to fit the image better. In addition to the depth-based-terrain-object, Ivy Generator generated and morphed branches I also added my own - Frame modeled & UV-mapped in Carrara. -The leaf model, modified in the vertex modelling room from a stock leaf model which came with Carrara.

I've had to "absorb" this in bits and pieces for a while before commenting. Like you, I find it a bit unsettling (actually quite unsettling), but it is a very powerful image. I feel many levels of emotion, inner turmoil mixed with caring and an undeniable feeling of trapped through commitment and responsibility with a need to escape. Wow, that was a mouthful. Technically and artistically - extremely well done. I'm not sure that these were the emotions/feelings you wanted to express, but that is what just jumps out at me. The poses and facial expressions are very communicative and where I derived most of the above interpretation.
