Description

Yes, that is their official title, captured 4/27/14, at the beautiful Renaissance Faire, held at the beautiful Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area, in semi beautiful Irwindale, California. Okay, I tried to find out the purpose of the brooms as props (known as besoms in medieval times) - maybe the pair were witches and this was their transportation - but couldn't get a word out of them due to Faire ground rules. Oh well, at least they stopped and posed for me. The smiling one at the bottom even offered a demure sign of greeting. All in all, a sweeping collage of just a few of the performers. Again, much better detail via ZOOM. Allaismalardik.

I don't recognise anything Medieval English about these costumes , but they are most interesting photos.

Strange and wonderful, I guess it's California-Rennaissance, which is an amalgamation of many, if not all, styles! The ladies looks more towards witchy than anything, and you captured some wonderful portraits of them. I'm still baffled about the no talking rule, that seems quite strange and very different from what I remember. Still, I'm ery much venjoying your visit to the faire vicariously through your shots, Harry!

Another joyous piece in this series. Re Andrea's comment about the costumes, I think they're supposed to be Renaissance and not Medieval costumes (and a bunch of them are while others aren't). And I think the witch's costume is more 'generic witch' than anything else. In any case, lovely shot of the witch. Number one has 2 others in similar outfit---one of them a man (behind) who's wearing a dark gown. And number two is a fine portrait of that lady looking right at you. You got lots of fine portraits in this series---the people look right at you, aren't afraid to smile or gesture, and the expressions are full. And the third one is another that could be its own upload---her smile is full but a wee bit reserved, as if she's telling you she knows this is an act but she's enjoying it. Her waving is subtle too---love the expression---and she's facing a bit on an angle, which is more subtlety. Fine work with her. This may add nothing to what you read, but from what I've studied, the broom has all kinds of associations with witches, some of them sexual and some of them having to do with spells and such. Perhaps the broom was more "superimposed" onto women who were perceived as evil, than actually "used" by them. And then, the broom may have been lifted from the common image of domestic females; we know that, in time, the broom made its way into female portraits. (Here's a famous example by Rembrandt: http://uploads8.wikipaintings.org/images/rembrandt/a-girl-with-a-broom.jpg) Whatever the source, it's mixed with lore, prejudices and what-not. They do make strong visual accouterments, though. Another fine collection from you. And I love that last shot.

English folklore : Witches rode on broomsticks.. etc! Though, while they always looked ugly in drawings etc, they tended to burn drown and kill pretty ones!? And colours of course were out! lol But, these make for great fun and KIDS LOVE EM! lol Good one! Rob
